Athlete Profile

  • Considered the United States' best hope for a gold medal in men's figure skating since Brian Boitano in 1988, Lysacek secured his spot in Vancouver despite an uninspired performance at the national championships. As he was all but assured of making the Olympic team, however, he used the event to test changes to his routine.
  • Is the reigning world champion and first U.S. man to win the world title since Todd Eldredge in 1996. Won despite a stress fracture in his left foot, which prevented him from attempting a quadruple jump.
  • Won Grand Prix final and Skate America.
  • Two-time U.S. champion was devastated to finish third at nationals last season, but it caused him to refocus, leading to his victory at worlds.
  • Finished fourth at Turin Olympics, a particularly impressive result considering he was so sick with the flu after the short program that he needed an IV.
  • Also won bronze medals at the 2005 and '06 world championships.
  • Best known for his artistry and performance skills.
  • Started skating when he was 8 because his grandmother bought him skates for Christmas.
  • Was on prom court his senior year at Neuqua Valley (Ill.) High School.
  • Moved to Los Angeles to train with Frank Carroll after finishing high school.
