Athlete Profile

  • Arguably the most well-recognized American athlete in the Winter Olympics with his long hair and “soul patch” facial hair.
  • A five-time medalist, this will be the third Winter Olympics for Ohno, who won a gold in the 1,500 meters and silver in the 1,000 at Salt Lake City in 2002 before adding a gold and two bronze medals at Turin, Italy, in 2006.
  • His five medals make him the most-decorated American male Winter Olympian along with Eric Heiden, and he is one behind Bonnie Blair for the most overall by an American athlete.
  • The Vancouver games would be a homecoming of sorts for Ohno, who hails from Seattle, which is three hours from the host city.
  • With Shani Davis opting to focus on long-distance qualifying, Ohno is arguably the best American short track speedskater.
  • Has won 23 medals in World Championship events and was the 2008 World Champion.
  • A three-time World Cup overall champion and seven-time US short track overall champion.
  • Stayed in the public spotlight by parlaying his Olympic success in 2006 into an appearance and eventual victory on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007.
