Athlete Profile

  • Ricker’s Olympic career predates the first appearance of her current event, as she finished fifth in the halfpipe all the way back in 1998 in Nagano. Injury kept her from the 2002 games and it struck again in 2006, when an ugly crash in the final of the inaugural snowboardcross race in Turin prevented her from finishing and forced her to settle for fourth place. The result was especially frustrating after she had posted the fastest qualifying time, but she quickly bounced back from a concussion and a banged-up neck and has re-established herself as one of the top contenders for gold in 2010. The veteran has certainly set a positive tone to the 2009-10 season with her 10th, 11th and 12th career snowboardcross World Cup gold medals at Chapelco, Argentina, Telluride, Colo., and Stoneham, Quebec. Last winter, she won World Cup races in Italy and Maine to help her finish second in the season standings to American star Lindsey Jacobellis. Ricker’s 2008-09 campaign also featured fourth-place finishes at the world championships and the Winter X Games, but she’d be disappointed to miss the podium when the Olympics are just a short drive from her home mountain of Whistler.
