Georgia wins its first gold of the games

Georgia, who is engaged in a military conflict with Russia, won their first gold of the Beijing Olympics in wrestling. Manuchar Kvirkelia, a Greco-Roman wrestler at 74 kg (163 lbs), easily defeating China's Yongxiang Chang in the gold medal match. Georgia briefly considered leaving the games when the conflict began but ultimately decied to stay. Hopefully, Kvirkelia's gold will act as a positive diversion for the Georgian people.

    HOOOOOORAY FOR GEORGIA. The Olympics are about sport not politics.
    Next opponent - take the Russian to the mat in style. Show them who's the better man.
    A win will do more for your country than quitting.

    Don't blame yourself Alicia, you all did extremely well. If you ask me, the judging wasn't as accurate as it should've been with USA's scores. They were a little low on some of the individual performances. China got away with mistakes all night that should have made the race for gold closer than it played out. We clearly had more solid performances on several apparatus, than China, and should have had a nice lead going in to the balance beam and floor exercises. Funny how after all these years there is still an attempt to lowball USA scores in the Olympics, and give certain countries ample chances to win despite mistakes. GO USA gymnastics. GO Alicia and team! YOU MADE US PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This means nothing Russia has taken all the golds in Greco-Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, Weightlifting, and Boxing Olympic after Olympic, World Championship after World Championship each and every time.

    i think that its great that the georgian contingent is still competing and now winning a medal... you think the pressure on the gymnasts was tough, think about how hard it is from athletes from that region with family members in danger and their country at war. and still being able to win at this level. Go Georgia!
