Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Olympics

Olympic gold medalist and outspoken Darfur activist Joey Cheek has had his visa revoked by the Chinese embassy, hours before the speedskating champion was set to fly to China. And he wasn't even planning on wearing a mask when he got there.

Chinese officials don't need a reason to revoke anyone's visa but, in their eyes, they had plenty of reasons to snatch Cheek's. He is the founder of Team Darfur, a group of 70 athletes whose goal it is to raise global awareness of the human-rights violations taking part in the Darfur region of Sudan. China's military, economic and diplomatic ties to Sudan have been well-publicized in the lead-up to the Games.

Said Cheek of his ban in a prepared statement:

"I am saddened not to be able to attend the Games. The Olympic Games represent something powerful: that people can come together from around the world and do things that no one thought were possible. However, the denial of my visa is a part of a systemic effort by the Chinese government to coerce and threaten athletes who are speaking out on behalf of the innocent people of Darfur.

Cheek was going to China to support the athletes on Team Darfur -- including soccer player Abby Wambach -- and to promote the cause, one that he has championed for years. After winning gold in the Torino Games, Cheek announced he was donating his $25,000 USOC bonus to Darfur and implored his sponsors to do the same. It seems that Joey Cheek is truly one of the good guys.

And now he's out of China before he even got there. With the Games getting closer (just two days away now), the world seemed ready to forget about all the Chinese issues in order to focus on the Games themselves. Unfortunately, China's actions make that impossible. In a time when we should be wondering who will light the Olympic cauldron, whether Michael Phelps can break an all-time record and how Liu Xiang will react to the pressure of 1.3 billion of his countrymen hanging on his every step, we're instead left to discuss the Chinese government's reluctance to allow any dissension in their country, despite repeated promises that they'd clean up their act when the Olympics came to town.

I don't think the ancient Greeks envisioned the Olympics to include politics, activism, etc, just pure athletics.

And the Greeks may not have envisioned it, but when the host country is turning people away for their beliefs and for blocking areas of their country from any publicity, because of the atrocities they are committing, someone needs to speak up on what is wrong. For athletes to show up and just compete for themselves is selfish. They say that they are competing for their country, then why don't they stand up for the ideals that their country believes in.

China is really blowing it. So many problems already and the games haven't even started yet. Nothing against the athletes, but I hope these Olympics fail to help force China to rethink their position with Sudan, human rights, and Tibet. They need to address all these issues before hosting something of this magnitude.

I see nothing wrong to deny the visa. If you come to my home to fight with me, of course you are not welcomed. period. And Olympics is not the place to take advantage.

This is pretty great fortune for Team Darfur. Even greater publicity because of the ban.
Although it's unfortunate that Cheek can't go, this ban just raised it up a notch. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

The United States denies visas all the time. Recently, they denied Amy Winehouse entry for an awards show, and all she's doing is hurting herself.

The Greeks also put to death any woman who watched the events. Stop comparing anything that happened centuries ago when the games were started to now. China should have never been awarded the Olympics. The IOC claims the Games are above politics and then put conditions on China regarding human rights and press freedom when awarded the Olympics. China has gone back on every promise and has made every attempt to use these Olympics to justify undemocratic and totalitarian regime.

I hate to say this, but I think we have to just get used to the fact that China is going to do business their way, and there's little that can be done about it. We're not going to stop doing business in China, nor would it be wise to do so. Texas executed someone today when the World Court said it was illegal to do so. All countries do things they aren't proud of but feel are necessary to preserve their own power.

Raymond A wrote "You know, I can't believe the Olympic community gave a Communist country like China the Olympics."
Hitler's Germany and USSR have hosted Olympics...
China was given the opportunity to show their character. And, sadly, it shows...

He is not going to the olympics to "fight," he is going there to support his friends and fellow athletes.

It hardly matters what the ancient Greeks envisioned for the Olympics. Besides, it's not like issues like Darfur and Tibet are just "petty politics". You can't say, "Oh, the Olympics is just about sports" and bury head in the sand about everything else. In the grand scheme of things, gold medals and world records are pretty pointless. The Chinese have shown the lengths that they will go to prevent any disruptions. I would love to see a medalist make statement about something on the podium, but I can't help but feel that anyone who does will end up imprisoned or even dead.

This is rather powerful, those of you here that are speaking out against Cheek (Sinchora) that athletes have consciences too. Probably the most famous example was Muhammad Ali. I respect what Cheek is doing and am glad that he is sticking up for those in the world that don't have a voice.

I truly Believe the US should boycott the olympics altogether. In 1968, two African-Americans had their medals taken for making political statements, this time, it's China who is making the political moves. Where in the world is the Olympics committee on this one? Why are they letting this go by? Come On!!!!! I can see how the Chinese govt discriminate against its own people, but now they are doing it to Americans! President Bush, are you still going to the opening ceremonies while this goes on? Bush, stand up and back up your people!

Sometimes the Olympics are great for showing us parts of the world we may not have had the opportunity to see. China is growing and its leaders are trying tame that growth while at the same time tame the political dissent in the country. The Olympics are showing us all sides of China-shedding a light on it if you will. Maybe that's a good thing.

Keep politics out of the Olympics. Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Every state and country has issues. All have their arrogance and national pride. Few states or countries need another loathsome, loudmouth, cheeky, twit. On with the games.

The Olympic games is the only real thing that brings all the countries together, Even the U.N Fails miserably at that, so it's a shame to see China, an upcoming global power Screwing it up.

John I ? Nowhere in the article does it say he would have intended to do any action other than watch the games while he was there. The Chinese denied him a Visa under the grounds that he "might" do something that would embarrass them and reveal on an international forum the atrocities they commit. I hope that athletes protest at every event, and that the Chinese Gov't is so embarrassed it gets it act together.
The reason someone is bringing a fight to "their home" is because there doing something completely unethical and wrong. The only reason they denied him the fight is because they know it.
