Athlete Profile

  • Considered by many in U.S. speedskating circles as the fastest-rising athlete heading into the Vancouver Games. Marsicano became the first American to earn four medals at the World Single Distance Championships after winning gold in the 1,000 meters, silver in 1,500 and bronze in the 5,000 and team pursuit events. He won a bronze in the 1,500 and was fifth overall at the 2009 World All-Around Championships. Marsicano also took silver in the 1,000 and 1,500 at the 2009 World Cup Final. Considered one of the country’s fastest skaters, Marsicano won gold in the 10,000 and silver in the 1,000 and all-around at the 2008 U.S. Championships. Marsicano’s rise in the sport has been more impressive considering he suffered a life-threatening leg injury during a 2004 short-track race and continues to manage depression brought on by an experience with a bully during middle school.
