Athlete Profile
- Kessel has had a very eventful first three seasons in the NHL. He managed only 11 goals and 29 points in 70 games as a rookie in 2006-07 after Boston made him the fifth overall selection in the 2006 draft. In December of that year, Kessel was diagnosed with a form of testicular cancer that remarkably caused him to miss only 11 regular-season games. After totaling 19 goals and 37 points in 82 games in 2007-08, Kessel blossomed into one of the game’s best young scorers the following season as he tallied a team-best 36 goals and 60 points in 70 contests. Because he failed to negotiate a contract extension with the Bruins, Kessel’s name came up in trade rumors throughout this offseason. Toronto acquired Kessel on Sept. 18 for three draft picks and signed him to a five-year, $27 million deal. He had shoulder surgery over the summer and didn't debut with the Maple Leafs until Nov. 3, making an instant impact with 10 goals and five assists in his first 15 games. Kessel was a member of Team USA at the World Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
