Athlete Profile

  • The only woman on the U.S. Olympic snowboarding team for her event, Gorgone could be primed to follow in the footsteps of countrywoman Rosey Fletcher, who retired after winning a bronze medal in the parallel giant slalom at the 2006 Olympics in Turin. Gorgone also qualified for those Games, finishing 22nd, and she has only improved her international status since then. Although she has only finished in the top 10 once in six World Cup events this winter, her 2008-09 World Cup season included five top-six finishes in parallel slalom and parallel GS, including appearances on the podium in Arosa, Switzerland (second), and La Molina, Spain (third). She also closed out the previous winter with a second-place finish at the final World Cup event in Valmalenco, Italy. A proud Italian-American nicknamed “Pirelli” after the popular racing tires - and her speed going down the mountain - Gorgone is a Bostonian who first honed her snowboarding skills under coach Bill Enos at Waterville Valley in New Hampshire.
