Athlete Profile

  • Grimmette, 39, makes his fifth Olympics appearance after he and Brian Martin defeated Matt Mortensen and Preston Griffall in a race-off in Lillehammer, Norway, on Dec. 16. Grimmette and Martin will try to become the first doubles team to medal in three decades. Grimmette has been involved in luge longer than most current members of the team have been alive, starting on a recreational basis in 1984. He just missed a medal in the 1994 Lillehammer Games with Jonathan Edwards, taking fourth. He went back to singles luge in 1995, but the lure of doubles was too strong, and a year later he paired with Martin and rejoined the doubles circuit. They've been together ever since. Grimmette and Martin took bronze in the men's doubles in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano and silver in Salt Lake City in 2002. Grimmette and Martin, though, failed to medal in Turin after crashing on their first run. Grimmette has battled back issues for years, but he and Martin have remained among the world's elite teams, proven again last season when they won the bronze medal at the world championships in Lake Placid _ the sixth bronze they've won at worlds. Grimmette and Martin have won the most international medals (65) ever among American luge competitors. They have the U.S. record with 11 World Cup victories, with overall titles in 1998, 1999 and 2003.
