Athlete Profile

  • After winning 50 world championships and 93 national championships as an in-line skater, Hedrick switched to the ice after watching the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics. In March 2004, he won gold in the 5,000 meters at the World Single Distance Championships in Seoul, South Korea. The next year he successfully defended his world title in Germany. Hedrick is one of only six men to have broken the 13-minute barrier in the 10,000 more than once. He has set six world records. At the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, Hedrick became only the third American to win three medals in a single Winter Olympics. He won gold in the 5,000, silver in the 10,000 and bronze in the 1,500. Although he has struggled since taking time off after Turin, Hedrick returned to form for the 2008-09 season and won the 1,500 and 5,000, and placed second in the 10,000 at the U.S. Long Track Championships.
