Athlete Profile
- Sauerbreij’s greatest accomplishment may be winning the 2007-08 overall World Cup title, which she did thanks in part to four gold medals in parallel slalom and parallel GS events on three different continents. But the Dutchwoman has also displayed consistency, with 18 career podium finishes in World Cup events and strong showings in the world championships in both 2007 (fourth in parallel slalom) and 2009 (sixth in parallel GS). She dealt with a foot injury but still finished fifth in the alpine World Cup standings last season, and she’ll be eager for an improvement at the Olympics after disappointing finishes in both 2002 and 2006. As the lone competitor from her country in her event in Turin, she lost in the first elimination round by 0.03 seconds to eventual silver medalist Amelie Kober of Germany, settling for 12th place after finishing 24th in Salt Lake City, where she was the flag bearer for the Netherlands’ contingent at the opening ceremonies. Sauerbreij could be hitting her stride just in time after winning gold in parallel GS at the January World Cup event in Kreischberg, Austria.
