Athlete Profile

  • The 2008 world champion, Asada placed fourth in the event last season and was the silver medalist in '07.
  • Won her fourth Japanese national title in 2009-10, placing first in both the short program and the free skate.
  • Won the '09 Grand Prix Final, beating rival Kim Yu-na in Kim's home country.
  • Has struggled with consistency this season. Placed second at Trophee Eric Bompard, but was more than 30 points behind Kim. Failed to make Grand Prix final.
  • Hugely popular in her home country, Asada left to train in the United States in August 2006 to escape the pressure of the Japanese media and the overcrowding of Japanese rinks, but returned to Japan in 2008.
  • During last season's Grand Prix final, became the first female skater to land two triple axels in the same program.
  • Would have been a medal favorite at the Turin Games _ she won the Grand Prix final that year _ but was too young to compete.
  • Older sister Mai is also an elite figure skater.
  • Has three miniature poodles, Aero, Tiara and Komachi. Aero has been featured in a commercial with Asada.

Hello I'm Keigo Moriyama and I was the photographer for the Japan Open 2010 event held in the Saitama Super Arena on October 2nd
Being also a fan of Asada Mao (have a preview of my first book at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1367049?ce=blurb_ew&utm_source=widget) I've decided to make a calendar with the photos of Mao Asada for all the fan like me. If you want you can find it online (free preview and special 10% discount for the first week) at this address
    http://www.lulu.com/product/calendario/mao-asada/13214937?showPreview
    Or in my hp (www.keigo.110mb.com)

I tried to keep the price lower as much as possible, a good print quality and choose to give discount too for all the fan! Go Mao chan go!!!!
If someone had the opportunity to see her in a real show and not only on tv can really understand how great she is.
    Thanks a lot

Asians are taking over figure skating!! The days of Russian dominance are over. These wonderful skaters make me very proud to be Asian. So all the haters who make nasty remarks about what bad drivers we are and have slanted eyes - beware cuz the Asians are here to stay.

I feel so bad for Mao Asada cause it's sounds like a ISU attacking her.
I was suspect about it for a long time, but this Olympic made it clear.

Guys, just look at how the figure skating today is ridiculous.
This is the protocols for this Olympic.

    short program
    http://www.isuresults.com/results/owg2010/owg10_Ladies_SP_Scores.pdf
    long program
    http://www.isuresults.com/results/owg2010/owg10_Ladies_FS_Scores.pdf

See? Kim got GEO very easily.(GEO is additional point)
Totally, she got almost 18 while other skaters (include man and woman) get mix of 8.

    How about asada?
Even she jump 3A no one give her the point, and one of them gave her -2.

How they decided GEO??No body knows.
Kim's GEO is adding like a crazy. Even she skate same program, her GEO is keep adding every time.(and this Olympic end up in 18) while Asada's GEO is always set so low. It seems like a Asada try to get GEO, so she made her program is way too difficult compare to the other skater. She adding some skating techniques between every elements.( Kim's program is very easy. If the program is easy, it helps to jump because the skater have a longer time for preparation.)
But still she get no GEO.
And year before the Olympic, ISU changing the score of jumping. And they set 3-3 is higer than 3A-2

    I mean...It is too much.I can't watch it anymore.

I am so happy finally other famouse skater speak up about it. ( it is unusual some skater speak up about judging system)

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to attacking other skater. I only talk about how this judging system is unclear, and recently too stupid.

Plushnko's Coach say " Olympic medalist in the past go above the sky,now the devil live with the judge under the ice"

    please speak put about it!

I hated how NBC didn't mention her ONCE after the free skate...I understand how amazing Kim and Rochette's stories are, but Silver is an accomplshment too and Mao was amazing...it's bad enough that her own country is dissapointed with her for winning silver, but we have to stoop as low as them too?

It was very close but i saw Mao winning Gold but Kim brought her A Game this time. As far as Joannie beating out Mao for silver ( Are you Kidding???) No chance !! MAO is much more fluid and tight and deserved Gold.

JUST TIRED of MAO (sounds like Chinese name..) keep whining about how she is disappointed of not getting the gold medal…Well, as a former athlete and current coach, Mao can say all she wants about WOULD, SHOULD, and COULD have done better statements.

This is a typical whining of unprofessional and amateur player after every disappointing games/plays. Sure, she could have done have done better, but she did NOT!!!

Everybody talks about her triple axle, but that’s just one of many technical elements that she has to integrate into ~4 minute program. As her performance shows, she noticeably tripped, faltered, lost her balance and speed, and didn’t and couldn’t finish her turns! Overall, she just lacked speed, agility and finesse between the moves.

After making major and noticeable multiple mistakes, Mao should be thankful that she received a silver medal instead of bronze medal. She was good, but NOT good enough (like 27 other participants)!!!

MIKI ANDO made fewer mistakes and was better than MAO in overall performance.

Congatulations Mao chan, you did great so proud of you,Ive watched with tears in my eyes, triple axels ,unbelievable ,jumps are high and clean, the spiral ,the straight line, the spin, you bring the game to the next level, and when you missed a little and saw the blade of your shoes was stock on the ice that cause you to miss the next jump..oh...,but in over all you did great you fight as a real Samurai....its so disappointing they give you low score...and the most unbelivable Rochette score is so close to Mao,thats ridiculous,a lot are surprised when she got third, fell sorry to other skaters who did thier best ,and they are all better than her....the Over rated score of kim yuna....this olympic favorite thing is so very dis appointing....and to those who called Mao a Cheap Threat to Kim ,theres no even a competetion on their column.....i dont know what are they thinking....all we know both Kim and Mao did great, its not like watching girls, they fight like boys ,so brave....congratulatoins Mao chan your such an excellent athlete ,hope to see more of you...good luck....

i don't understand why Mao looked so disappointed with the silver. isn't silver the best she could get with Yuna taking gold?

perhaps she was hoping to win gold and top Yuna... what a far-fetched dream.

she did her best, she was excellent and she should be happy! she just looked so miserable taking second, i mean she was holding back tears on the podium.

She looked so disappointed and I felt bad :( It's sad that she and Kim had so much pressure put upon them. I hope she and Japan see her silver medal as an accomplishment. And I wish people would stop criticizing the skaters, or turning this into a political debate!

No dissing bout who won or lost.
She did her best, and even though she didn't win she did amazing.
As I am a Korean person even I can't say she didn't do bad.
She landed 3 Triple axels not even Kim- Yuna could do that.
I'm proud of both of them. They did both really well :]

Why is nobody saying anything good about the silver winer – Mao Asada?….Congratulations to her and the most important to her Russian coach – Tatyana Tarasova who has been a coach to more world and Olympic champions than any other coach in skating history. As of 2003 her students have won a total of 41 gold medals. As of 2006, her students have won a combined total of 9 Olympic gold medals in three of the four Olympic figure skating disciplines. Thus, she is popularly called the "Champion maker".
    She did it again!
What is really sad that nobody even mentioned her and during the performance her face was not even shown while she was waiting the result next to Mao Asada….Did North American media start a new Cold War?......

She was obviously disappointed. But hey! a silver medal is not that bad. In fact, it's not bad at all! To be able to participate in the Olympics and represent your own country is already a great honor. She has a great future ahead of her.

Was holding my breath for all the 6 final skaters Thurs. night, but especialy for Mao, who soared past expectations. The music and Mao's dramatic skating must have been riveting to see in person. A great future stretches out. Inspiring.
