- Leader in the World Cup slalom standings who arrives at the Olympics as the man in form after winning the last two races _ the Schaldming night race in Austria, and Kranjska Gora, Slovenia _ in a six-day span. Herbst, who only skis slalom, will defend the Olympic silver medal he won in Turin four years ago that helped make his reputation as a late developer.
- He was 26 when first scoring points in a World Cup race, at Beaver Creek, Colorado, in December 2004.
- Before the Turin Olympics season, Herbst was dropped from the elite Austria squad and funded his own offseason training.
- Just as his career looked set, Herbst damaged his left knee playing in a July 2006 charity football/soccer match.
