Athlete Profile

  • A slalom specialist who has returned from serious injury to try for the major gold medal that has eluded her in an already illustrious career. The 28-year-old Austrian has come back to her best this season after missing the whole of the 2008-09 campaign because of a broken left leg. Schild, who is engaged to double Olympic champion Benjamin Raich, is no stranger to injuries and comebacks. She raced downhill early in her career but switched to the slightly safer technical disciplines after undergoing a succession of knee surgeries.
  • Won World Championships silver medals in slalom in 2003 and '07, and back-to-back bronzes in combined at the 2005 and '07 worlds.
  • Medaled twice at the 2006 Turin Olympics, getting silver in combined and slalom bronze.
  • Top honors came in the World Cup where she led the slalom and combined standings in 2007, and repeated in slalom before breaking her leg in training.
  • Won both Austrian slaloms this season _ at Lienz and Flachau _ and now has 22 career World Cup wins, 20 coming in the shortest discipline.
