Highlights
Scott Macartney, son of volunteer ski patrol parents, was a four-event skier growing up in Washington state, but he narrowed his focus to speed events as his best route to the World Cup. The Washington native was a 2002 Olympian, and in 2003 he was the NorAm super G champ and won two bronze medals at the U.S. Championships in downhill and SG.
Update
Sidelined much of the 2004 season with a left knee injury, Macartney skied his way to his first World Championships in '05. Simply getting back into racing mindset was a big goal, and having one top-30 and producing eight other results in the 30s - close but no cigar for World Cup points - gave him confidence to keep charging this season as he tries to become a two-time Olympian. Coach John McBride noted, "Seeing 'Scotty Mac' so close, but just not punching into the top 30 was frustrating...but he'll get it done. He's got some serious talent, if we can keep him healthy."
Start-Up
On skis at 3, Macartney started racing at 7 at Crystal Mountain where his parents were (and remain) volunteer Ski Patrol members on weekends. A strong slalom skier, he was Western J3 slalom gold medalist in ’93, J2 SL champ in ’94, silver medalist in slalom at the ’95 J1-2 Western Junior Olympics, J1 SL champ in ’96, and national junior super G champ in ’97. By ’99, he was a fledgling downhiller, grabbing the bronze medal at Junior Worlds.
Injuries
A crash in downhill training in Val Gardena, ITA, led to ACL/MCL surgery on his left knee in late December. 2001 " Suffered a concussion and back injury in late-season crash that ended his season. 2000 " Patella tendon surgery at midseason.
Personal
Macartney has nearly completed his economics degree at Dartmouth. After bronze medals in downhill and super G at the 2003 U.S. Championships, he finished his final race (GS) and was in class at Dartmouth the next day...Motto: “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room”...Enjoys hiking mountain biking, surfing.
