Johnny Weir began skating at the relatively late age of 12. He became inspired to skate after watching Oksana Baiul skate to Olympic gold in 1994. Weir’s first venture onto the ice occurred one harsh winter when the cornfield behind his house froze over.
Among Weir’s most prized possessions is a miniature long-haired Chihuahua named Vanya. Vanya (which is Johnny in Russian) was born the day Weir performed his long program at 2005 World Championships and given to him as a 21st birthday present.
After his skating career, Weir says he would like to settle down and live a normal life in Boston and Moscow. He hopes one day to own his own fashion label and meet pop singer Christina Aguilera, who he describes as his idol.
