Brendan Hansen Biography
Hansen will get another chance at his first individual gold medal in London, his third Olympics. He won the 100 meter breaststroke at the trials to cap his comeback after retiring from the sport following the Beijing Games. "In 2008, I didn't really want to be here anymore, I was kind of worn down by the whole idea," he said. "Now I'm just having so much fun with it and I feel like I'm running on borrowed time. I'm just really proud of myself for saying that I was going to come back and then actually come back and be back." Hansen, however, will not be competing in the 200 breast after finishing fourth behind surprise winner Scott Weltz at the trials. Hansen will get another shot at Japanese star Kosuke Kitajima in the 100 breast in London after a disappointing fourth-place finish in China. Hansen was admittedly disgusted with himself after his performance in Beijing, which followed his failure to win gold in either the 100 or 200 breast in Athens. He settled for silver in the 100 and bronze in the 200, though he also won gold for his role in the world-record setting 4x100 medley relay. Hansen prepared for the 2012 trials by winning the 100 and 200 breast at the 2011 nationals. He has 23 total medals in major international competition, including 17 gold.
