Slow lane: Phelps misses out world record binge

  • Print

BERLIN (AP)—Racing in an old-style swimsuit and with little practice, Michael Phelps didn’t join the swimmers in high-tech suits who went on a world record binge at two short-course World Cup meets this week.

Phelps had to settle for second place in the 200-meter individual final on Sunday behind Darian Townsend of South Africa, who broke one of the 16 world records set in two days of competition in Berlin.

Those records followed the nine that were set in Stockholm earlier this week as swimmers continue to rewrite the record books before the high-performance suits are banned on Jan. 1. More records are likely to be broken at the upcoming World Cup meet in Singapore, the European short-course championships and an All-Star meet in December.

Phelps ended his weeklong European tour with no wins in two meets, let alone any records. Still, the American wasn’t complaining—at least not that much.

“I prefer not to lose, but I knew coming in that it would be very, very hard to win anything,” Phelps said.

“I raced as hard as I could, I’ve gotten some racing under my belt and that’s what we set out to do. Maybe it’s better for me that I lost today, it gives me better motivation for the future,” he said.

“I am pleased with the week as much as I can be, with how much training I’ve done, which is little. And it shows.”

Phelps won an unprecedented eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics wearing a high-tech suit. While his rivals continue to swim in the soon-to-be banned suits, he has gone back to the old-style, textile knee-length suit, hoping he’ll have an advantage when the rest of the swimmers return to them.

“Considering the suit he’s wearing and the shape he is in, I’ll take it,” Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, said of his swimmer’s performance in the two meets. “It could have been worse.”

In Stockholm, Phelps also finished second in the 200 medley and missed three finals. In Berlin, he missed two finals and was fifth in the 200 butterfly Saturday.

Townsend also beat Phelps in Stockholm and on Sunday the difference was again more than 2 seconds.

The South African powered home in 1 minute, 51.55 seconds to break Ryan Lochte’s world mark by one-hundredth of a second. Phelps clocked 1:53.70.

Earlier Sunday, Phelps failed to qualify for the 200 freestyle final and spoiled an anticipated showdown with rival Paul Biedermann. The German beat Phelps in the same event at the world championships in Rome in August and took away his world record. Until this week, Phelps had not competed since.

Biedermann shattered his second world record in two days when he won the 200 butterfly final in 1:39.37, slashing nearly 1.5 seconds off his old mark.

The German also broke the 400 freestyle record Saturday.

Several other swimmers broke two records in two days in Berlin: Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa in the men’s 50 and 100 breaststroke; Shiho Sakai of Japan in the women’s 100 and 200 backstroke; and Leisel Jones of Australia in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Among the 10 record breakers Sunday was Jessica Hardy of the United States, who lowered her own 50 breaststroke mark to 28.80, after swimming 28.96 in Stockholm four days ago.

    wow, really "the_dude6789"??

He's not wearing the same suit which shaves between 1-1.5 seconds off of most swimmers. considering the times he lost by 1.5-2.3 seconds, I think he will take it since those suits will be banned in January and the field will be level again.

He's wearing a slower suit, swimming in a 25m pool in a meaningless meet, and swimming in off-events while he isn't in top shape. Of course he's gonna get beat. Seriously, folks - anyone who thinks Phelps is washed-up, finished, or is anyway concerned by his finishes in these races is an ignorant fool regarding the sport of swimming. Swimmers build their entire schedules to peak physically and psychologically at specific meets - in Phelps' case, the Olympic Games and the World Championships. He couldn't care less about some meaningless World Cup meet. Most likely, the only reason he's competing in it at all is to get used to racing in the old-style suits and see how that affects him. When Phelps gets beaten at Nationals, Worlds, or the Olympics in one of his signature races by an athlete wearing the same quality suit he is, then I'll start talking about how he's lost his edge. Not before.

It's funny reading many of these comments. Phelps should be commended on using the swimsuits that will be the norm again, as laid down in the rules, in only 6 weeks. Many of you are writing him off. He's not old and out of shape. If anything, a seasoned athlete knows that giving yourself a mental break is absolutely essential for peak performance - if that's what he's doing, on top of not using the soon-to-be illegal suits. In fact, it's smart of him to get his muscles used to not using those swim suits anymore. It takes weeks if not months to fine-tune (make micro-changes) your stroke if major changes (speedsuit no longer used) occur to it. He's basically saying, I don't care about the latter part of 2009, I've had a successful year or so, and I'm taking a holiday while still being in the pool and training, and getting a head start on 2010 and beyond.

You just wait until meets occurring after 01/01/10. He won't be two seconds behind in the prelims. He'll be right up there, as usual. Take away the advantage that all other swimmers have had, have him back in a long-course set-up, and it'll be business as usual for Phelps.

phelps is not perfect. hes not going to win every single race but that doesnt take away from him. he still will be handling his business in the pool for a long time to come.

Any of you out there spouting off about pot ought to try some and then jump in the pool and swim a few laps. You might think you swam faster but you didn't and most likely you swam in slow motion.

But at the same time, a few hits might calm you down a bit and reduce the venom you are spewing every time you open your mouth. So Phelps smoked a little pot? For god's sake grow up! So friggin what?

Whether he ever wins another medal he's the all-time greatest swimmer in the history of the sport and NO--
you can't do that by smoking pot.

It may not help mentally performance wise, but it does help with mental health issues and is better than the antidepressants that are out there. I think the person that took and offered the pic out is a real dirtbag and needs his butt kicked. It would not even be an issue if not for the publicity seeking nerd that ratted him out with the pic taken.

Robin H, that was pretty funny.. I think everybody is sticking to stereotypes too much though.. I can see both sides of the argument.... I know plenty of people with great lifes, and great jobs, and do what they need to, and smoke pot, and I know some people that it just envelops their whole life. It all depends on the person. You need to know what type of person you are, and if you can handle smoking it regularly. For some it may be gateway drug, for others just a occasional stress reliever with really no side effects or negatives for them. I don't think any one can judge michael regardless, he did what he had to do, and whether he smoke pot or not deserves his victories, and will forever be the best or one of the best swimmers.

I think its funny every one assumes he is a pot head. No one proved he even smoked it more than once.. even if he did smoke it... it could have been a joke for all everyone knows... I agree that marijuana in a short term usage ( even 1-5 years) prob will not slow your body down ,or hurt performance.(like said b4 sports that use alot of the lungs like running and swimming def wont help) It definitely will not help. Even though, if it doesn't hurt you, it certainly doesnt help mentally, in the motivational aspect. I dont dog any body than smokes, and I won't lie, I have smoked before. I am a ahtlete, and I choose not to smoke now, just because it will not help me focus.. I woulndn't be concerned with effects of really hurting my body. It actually helped with pain of shoulder injury doing football season in the past. Michael has accomplished so much, and you can't win every race. Like many said before, he specializes in certian events, and isnt realy a short distance swimmer. Im sure there are mediocre college middle distance or distance runners that would be USAIN BOLT, Because he specializes in speed and short distance, that takes nothnig away from his accomplishments in HIS events.

Good deal. Now go get yourself a few bong rips and celebrate what you have done. Nothing wrong with hooch and it has many medicinal uses that are far better for a person than all of the other crap doctors put people on. Side effects of hooch = the munchies. I can live with that.

The problem with marijuana is that it's the loser drug. You won't spout green horns out of your head or immediately start using heroin, but there's no way you can function at the top of your ability in anything if you are stoned.

There are so many idiots on these posts. All this shows is that they should throw out all of the records swimmers achieved with the hi-tech suits. Because those records will stand forever. Watching Phelps in an old style suit swim against the hi-tech suits doesn't support this it screams advantage. I would say that the hi-tech suits are the equivalent of doping. And to that super-idiot Joachim, go ****** yourself. I would assume that no woman would have an idiot like you.

Phelps will remain the best swimmer of all time until somebody comes along and either obtains more medals in an olympic or more "overall". real swimmers also recognize the tons of gold he won at world games events.

what we are seeing is simple. Phelps is out of shape. Combine that with the fact that he is getting older, may lack motivation and is wearing the old suit. I think he might oddly enjoy getting beat to motivate him once again. I think he is lacking that fuel and when the critics write him off he will succeed. That being said, don't exepct a Bejinng repeat in London. I'm sure he will win a few golds but likely will not win all is events.

NOTHING SHOULD BE WRONG if this happens....he should be celebrated for being the best ever
