The shameful case of Caster Semenya

  • Print

Looks like South African runner Caster Semenya will be able to keep the gold medal she won at the recent world championships in Berlin.

The public humiliation? That will stay with her, too, long after the gold loses its shine.

Three months after she mopped up the field in the women’s 800, international sports officials are trying to tie a ribbon on a deal that will likely allow Semenya to keep the world title and prize money she won in Berlin. They’re also planning a symposium to make sure the next person they suspect is a man in a female track outfit is at least treated with a bit of decency.

Semenya could also be spared the further indignity of the public release of her most private medical records. If things are handled right, the world may never know the intimate details of her gender tests.

Sadly, it’s all too late for the teenager whose worst offense seems to be that she believes she’s a woman while the people who look at how fast she runs can’t believe she’s not a man.

Because there’s no deal that can undo the damage already done, no deal that can give Semenya back her self-respect.

And there may never be a way to make a deal to allow her to run again.

Just how it all got to this point is a tale that goes beyond the seemingly simple question of man versus woman. Semenya was always going to draw stares in her first appearance on the world stage simply because of how she looks, but what happened to her in Berlin was shameful beyond description.

South Africa was so desperate to end a medal drought in the world championships that the country’s track chief agreed to the unusual—and unprecedented—request by the International Association of Athletics Federations to have gender tests done on Semenya. Then, just hours before she was to run, the IAAF took it upon itself to announce it was investigating whether she was really a woman.

Semenya went out and blew the competition away anyway, running so fast it looked like the other runners were mired in quicksand. She won by nearly two and a half seconds, finishing in 1:55.45, and accepting the congratulations of her fellow runners.

It should have been a triumphant moment in the life of an 18-year-old from a small South African village. It became a media circus where the biggest debate wasn’t how fast she ran, but how to figure out if she was telling the truth about what she really was.

It used to be easier for Semenya, whose athletic physique and deep voice always raised suspicion. She faced the same questions before, but there was a simpler way of answering them then.

An article in the current issue of the New Yorker quotes one of her former coaches as saying that she became accustomed at having to go into the restroom with a member of the opposing team so they could look at her private parts before they would race against her back home.

It’s not so easy now. The question of gender is a muddled one at best, particularly for a tiny portion of the population born with the physical characteristics of both genders or chromosome disorders. One reason mandatory gender testing for female athletes in the Olympics was dropped in 1999 was that not all women have standard female chromosomes.

The IAAF has refused to confirm or deny Australian media reports that the tests indicate Semenya has both male and female sex organs. Her family, though, has always been sure of her gender.

“What can I do when they call her a man, when she’s really not a man?” her paternal grandmother, Maputhi Sekgala, told the South African daily The Times. “It is God who made her look that way.”

Her grandmother isn’t her only backer. Many in South Africa have come to her defense, suggesting that both ignorance and racism contributed to the public spectacle in Berlin.

Semenya, meanwhile, has begun college and is still training. But the attention has taken its toll.

“It’s not so easy,” she recently told the Guardian newspaper. “The university is OK but there is not many other places I can go. People want to stare at me now. They want to touch me. I’m supposed to be famous.

“I don’t think I like it so much.”

She may not like the future much better. Though technically still allowed to compete, that could change depending on both the results of her tests and new guidelines for dealing with “ambiguous” gender tests that the International Olympic Committee will look at in January.

Even if Semenya gets the green light, it’s hard to imagine how she can run knowing every eye in every stadium will be studying her intently, trying to determine if she is really a he.

Yes, it will be nice if track officials make amends by allowing her to keep her gold medal and $60,000 first prize.

Would be even nicer if they could give her back her dignity, too.

Irina and Tamara (not Svetlana) Press were certainly big strong girls, whether or not they were hermaphrodites is still just a rumor, they finished carrier in sport before a mandatory gender-text was established. If You look at their photos, they look way more feminine than many current women-athletes, both face wise and body wise:

However, there is a plenty of documented cases when other countries used hermaphrodites in Olympics, world championships, etc.

The current case is just outrages, if we let things just go, pretty soon there will be no women at all in the high ranking sport. I think, everybody would regret it. We should preserve beauty of a women competition. As for hermaphrodites, mixed genders, I think we should make a special category for them to compete fairly.

Scientifically and biologically, all athletes with whom Castor Semenya competed against in the 800m final sholud have been tested to verify the level of their transgender as they are part of this test. Just because they did not show some of the traits that Semenya showed, that does not mean that they are not transgender. Being transgender does not mean strength. For example, there are men, thousands of them that cannot run faster than women and yet they are fully men even after they have trained properly. I am one hundred percent convinced that at least three of the athletes Semanya competed against in the 800m final had a degree of Semanya's condition. If indeed Semanya is being judged scientifically and biologically, then all the athletes in that final, if not all the competitors in 800metres, should be judged and tested.
Biologically, women can have an additive to their traits such as inner testacles and beared hormones and yet still be able to produce children. Sould they be discredited as not real women? Semanya is a woman with an additive and who lacks other things, it can happen to any woman. For example, Maria Mutola was shaped like a man with straight hips and yet she is a woman. I believe she had an additive. Therefore, all the other athletes should be tested for the same condition as Semenya Castor, Its the only way to be fair scientifically and biologically, other wise this is a very poor sample indeed. Scientifically and biologically they are being unfair to Semanya Caster.

It knew what it was doing. It new that there would be insane media coverage. It new just as well as Ben Johnson knew he would be watched very closely by everyone. It tarnished itself, nobody held a gun to it's head. And for the record it isn't a woman and it doesn't deserve a Gold medal in a woman's sport anymore than Ben Johnson deserved his.

This is to endorse the divine academic writings, rendered by my distinguished colleague, DR. DIOS, a WHITE HISPANIC MAN, who--on account of his superior socio-intellectual standing---has been enslaving negroes, SPICS (i.e., mestizos and indios), and those despiccable, cornbred-eating, bible-thumping, roadkill-eating, cowboy-boots wearing, southern-drawl babbling, and NASCAR-loving REDNECKS.
The International athletics commission has NOT yet decided, whether that ugly negro boy from South Africa---sporting a vagina, and non-descended testicles, as well as ape-like jaw lines, flat, non-elevated nasal bones, and a coconut shaped head, with some kinky stuff being cultivated on top of that dry coconut---may keep the Olympic medal, or continue to defraud his female competitors.
Most likely, he will have to return the medal to the second-placed finisher at the Olympics, a genuine female.
Caster's social environment should have been alerted to his gender problems. Because, African women, and those who are (allegedly) perceiving themselves as a woman (like S. Caster) are sexually active at a very early age---just like U.S.-based ghetto women of the negro.id stock, who are littering their offsprings outside of a normal family setting, with male jungle bunnies referring to them a "my baby mama"---and it should have been noted that S.Caster would never have an offspring, despite getting boned by lots of South African ghetto boys. Of course, you can't get pregnant if you do not have a full set of reproductive organs, with ovaries making up an important part.
Many of the here responding imbeciles have stated that he could have surgery to convert him into a female. The gender tests are, first and foremost, physiological tests, and no amount of removal-type surgery would have an impact on her hormone levels.
    @Dan C.:
Thanks for providing us with a statistically significant description of SUBHUMAN, WHITE PIECES OF REDNECK GARBAGE WHO---LIKE YOU---ARE THE CHIEF DELINQUENTS OF OUR SOCIETY, together with the violent SP.ICS and NI.GS.

William -- if you would have this woman race with the men, would they not be complaining that she also has female sex organs?

She is both, and should be able to choose whom she races. She has been raised female. Are you suggesting she should be banned from racing women?

There are Special Olympics and there are the ParaOlympics (which usually follow the Olympics in the same venue a number of weeks after the Olympics are over, but are rarely covered on television). Two very different Olympics venues for people with disabilities. Please be aware of what you're discussing before doing so.

this is a joke. don't know how many of those commenting actually watched the race, if you observe the body parts which are exposed there are so many male traits. i don't know exactly what the test outcome was/is however, the leaks have determined she/he is a hermaphrodite. there is NO way anyone could merely observe anything other than the S. Africian government trying to put something over on the world. the mustache, the thigh muscles, the normal gate, lack of breast of any kind. we listen to the jokes and acqusations with Florence Griffith-Joyner, and she was NEVER as masculine as this girl it. yes until it is verfied she/he should NOT run again. and yes because of the controversy it will have to public, i don't see the humiliation if she is female. i just don't believe the family has NEVER taken her to seek medical attention regarding some of the lack of female traits. i just don't believe the S. Africian athletic assoc. nor the government and as some have noted i am a black female, an athlete in my day.

No, there is nothing wrong with being a hermaphrodite, however it does give "her" one hell of an advantage against the other female athletes "she" competes against doesn't it?

Gender discrimination and verification issues are not simplistic, nor are they skin color related. Those perusing a racial bent here show their true colors. Folks here might want to view the position paper regarding current acceptable gender verification by both the IAAF and IOC. It's a simple read.

it is sat that the idea of blogging has become a haven for bitter people with only mean intentions....the racist, the hateful, the bitter have found a place to make the rest of us sit up and notice them. What i really can't stand however are the passive aggressive racist....those who uses colorful words to hide their true intent. This life is too short to waste it on hate...i wish they were a way to give your life to people that are about the betterment of human kind, and not concerned with they fake superiority over others! All this young lady did is live the life she was given, and you wouldn't even let her have that now! It is not as if she went out and had this done sho she can run faster...this is the workings of nature...should i go after every man that can run and jump faster and higher than i can?

camper girl 01 needs to have an open mind. Everyone is a person male or female. Our bodies are different and that is what makes us indevidual. You could look at the top women of sports, give them the test and they may have more testosterone than the women that are not that good. But, since they look like women noone will say anything. This women has a vagina and brests. that is what makes a women. Let her compete and let her become the best at her sport. Eventually, someday, someone will be better, but for now, give her her spotlite.

I find it so incredibly interesting that no one bit at the idea of "genetic discrimination" or "genetic racism" that I mentioned. How so very close minded the most of you are. She was born this way, this young woman had no idea. If some of you did more research; you would learn that a person can be more one way than the other. She has more of the makeup for being female, therefore she is a female. "Racism" doesn't always have to be about skin color. This issue is not about skin color, it's about genetics. She did nothing wrong except believe that she had a true talent and wanted to challenge herself to be the best. Imagine in her very young mind how all of this is affecting her and how it will impact her future, her feelings about herself, her dreams and desires. I find this whole incident so very sad and cruel. For most of you, I truly hope that you never have children or have any; if you do, MAY GOD HELP THEM because they are going to need all the help they can get. I don't know how your children can grow up to be well adjusted and emotionally healthy adults. I will pray for Semanya and hope that she somehow finds it within herself to move on from this.

This issue is about gender - not color, so let's no muddy the waters with that. And, for those that continue to play the race card (black or white), are biased.

If this runner has an overabundance of the male hormone testosterone, then those competing against her whose bodies are ruled by estrogen, don't stand a chance. Testosterone is what make men stronger, faster, etc. - hence you don't have men competing against women and you don't have athletes who have taken performance enhancing drugs competing against those who have not.

I, too, feel sorry for what she has had to go through and what she will continue to have to endure because of the prejudice of those who would vilify her for her color or hermaphrodism, but that is a societal issue that can only be overcome through education to eliminate ignorance about the condition. BUT, the question here "Should she be allowed to compete against women?" No, she should not. It quite simply is NOT a fair contest - period!

Reading comments here reinforces why I don't frequent blogs often. The hatred spewed out minimizes and semblance of rational, logical discussion by others. Those who can't distinguish between humanism and civility should go back under his/her rock and continue to mold in the darkness of self-imbued ignorance.

In response to Roger, comment 394. Thanks very much for posting something that needs to be said more often. Is anybody out there old enough to remember some of the women athletes that the old Soviet Union used to trot out? They also blew away the competition, but when they were finally tested because of the uproar about them, it was discovered that they did not have the female chromosomes that indicated female gender. Two that come to mind were the Press sisters (think their given names were Irina and Svetlana). None of the other female athletes ever stood a chance against them, either.

It is simply not fair to allow somebody who is predominantly a different gender to run in a race that is specifically designated as to which gender is qualified to be in it. It's about what's fair in the sport for all competitors, not just one. Women have it tough enough as it is without also having to compete with somebody who is not biologically or chromosomatically or pathologically their own gender. If South Africa knew this person would not be eligible to compete as a female, then it should NEVER have allowed her to - for her sake, the sake of other runners and its.
