Speedskater Timmer falls hard at World Cup race
HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP)—Two-time Olympic speedskating champion Marianne Timmer fell hard and was carried off the ice on a stretcher Friday in a World Cup 500-meter race.
Timmer slammed into inflatable barriers at the Heerenveen stadium after Chinese skater Jing Yu fell in front of her. Yu was also carried off the track on a stretcher.
The Dutch skater won the 1,000-meter race at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and the same race at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano.
Her coach Jac Orie said the extent of Timmer’s injury was not immediately clear. He said Timmer appeared to twist her ankle as she hit the barrier.
“It’s hard to know what it is, but it is not good,” Orie said. “It is just terrible luck if a girl falls in front of you.”
German world-record holder Jenny Wolf won the 500 in 37.93 seconds despite having a slight slip in her race.
