Athletics South Africa suspended by governing body
JOHANNESBURG (AP)—South Africa’s Olympic governing body has suspended Athletics South Africa in the fallout over Caster Semenya’s gender tests.
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee said in a statement it was suspending the track organization immediately.
The action comes after Athletics South Africa’s attorneys sent a letter saying the decision by the committee a day earlier to suspend the ASA president Leonard Chuene and board was “unreasonable” and “unfair.”
The Olympic committee said the letter indicated ASA “will not respect (its) directives and/or resolutions.”
Semenya won the 800-meters at the world championships at Berlin in August after the IAAF said it had ordered gender tests. Chuene later said he lied about his knowledge of the tests.

My wife and I are in a racially mixed marriage. I never even thought of my wife as being from a different race. She is the person I fell in love with. I was reminded by a doctor that I was from a mixed relationship as we explored having healthy children. We wanted to protect our child the best way we knew how, even before we conceived.
I have followed Miss Semenya's story as it has unfolded. Her ordeal should not have been made public and ASA's president Chuene did nothing to protect Caster.
Eventually, Caster's condition would have to be investigated as it was inevitable that questions would arise in her personal life (intimacy) or while participating in a race. It was a matter of time before another athlete would question Caster's gender for any number of reason's: her speed increased so dramatically in a year, her running form (Caster recuperates so fast during a race-unlike females, a hormonal thing), the structure of her musculature-look at her thigh muscles-they do not taper as they approach her hips, her voice, and of course, she would eventually be examined once she started a intimate relationship.
What is at issue is that Mr. Chuene put the well being (mentally and physically) of an athlete in jeapardy in order to secure a gold medal, the ASA president created an international scandal, deceit- when the Olympics are to be enveloped in good will and honesty and Mr. Chuene incited his countrymen to riot calling the race card [there would be no question if she was white], in order to deflect attention from the gender issue and circumvent the investigation so Caster could enter and win more events without being hindered with the knowledge that her gender was questioned by other athletes (the distraction of being investigated could have distracted her-eventually, and slowed her times).
Caster should get the best care (mentally and physically) to manage her condition and the situation that Mr. Chuene has created. I pray for the best for her.
ASA (Mr. Chuene) has said, that, he lied to protect Caster. He lied for the potential to obtain a gold medal. He lied because his organization has not been doing well athletically the past few years and having a medal would have vindicated his organization (and him) while bringing in more money from sponsors-after all, ASA manages athletes and is compensated for it.
Initially, a coach or a manager in charge of Caster quit because of how the situation was being handled. When someone quits that; has devoted so much time (plus time toward a pension), and effort, people will start to investigate.
Had Mr. Chuene been honest to Caster, she could have made a decision or at least had some input on what she wanted to do: race or not to race, inform the public of the situation diplomatically, or to go through the investigation with her in control of the information being disseminated and how fast the investigation would proceed and how her career would be handled during this delicate situation. At 18 years old, she is a responsible adult-adult in the eyes of the S. African government and adult enough to be a world class athlete in the public eye confronting the public every day in all circumstances. Mr. Chuene was not protecting a child.
If Mr Chuene had been honest with the other organization in question, it would have allowed or assisted the ASA in an ongoing gender investigation. The sensationalism of the event would not have been as newsworthy without the coverup nor would it have been in the public eye if it had not been handled professionally, honestly and transparently.
I hope the racial tension caused by ASA's president Chuene has not caused the different nationalities to harm one another. If his allegations of discrimination has caused harm to anyone, Mr. Cheune and anyone else involved in the coverup should be prosecuted for inciting a riot.
Mr. Chuene has behaved unprofessional to say the least and has broken the law by publicly inciting a riot by claiming discrimination was the cause for the gender investigation of Caster Semenya, when he was sitting on top of the truth and knew that there was just cause for the gender investigation. Mr. Chuene and many in ASA knew the truth yet kept quiet while Mr. Chuene continued to fuel the discrimination fire in his country and around the world. He informed the world of his lies only after e-mails and memos of his lies were published and could no longer deny the truth.
How can ASA give a vote of confidence for a liar? South Africa has the oportunity to clean house and gain the world's respect if they clean house. ASA needs to be rid of its liars and unprofessionals to regain the world's trust and respect.
