Penguins captain Crosby runs with Olympic torch

  • Print

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP)—Five months after lifting the Stanley Cup, Sidney Crosby carried the Olympic torch as thousands of people lined a downtown street.

Clad in an official torchbearer uniform, the Pittsburgh Penguins captain ran about 300 yards Wednesday before passing the torch to snowboarder Sarah Conrad.

“You look at the people out there, you see the signs of the excitement,” Crosby said. “You never dream of carrying the torch. For me, that wasn’t something that I ever thought would be a possibility.”

Crosby’s hometown of Cole Harbour lies across the harbor from Halifax.

“It’s not just about me carrying the torch or another person—this is a celebration of the whole country and just to be a part of that, I feel so honored,” Crosby said. “Whether I was playing hockey or whether I was someone here locally who just got the chance to do it, I think we can all say that it’s a tremendous opportunity and we’re proud to be able to do it.”

The relay began in Victoria last month and will make stops in every province and territory leading up to the Winter Games in Vancouver in February.

@46 This is an intervention, put the crack pipe down. Wayne Gretzky is and will always be the greatest canadian hockey player ever. I know crack kills brain cells so it might be too late for you. Also you will be waiting for a long long time if you think Canada or Russia is going to the gold medal round. Maybe if you turn to heroin it will give you the hallucination you desire.

Get off your knees you look stupid. Plus Cyndy is looking uncomfortable with you smiling at his waist.

What an honor for the most complete and dominant hockey player in the world today, and probably the greatest player in history by the end of his career, to carry the torch in his hometown on its way across his home country to the place where he will lead Canada back to the top of the hockey world.

I can hardly wait for the handshake between Ovechkin and Crosby at the end of the gold medal game where that fugly gap-toothed commie red neck is forced to bow down in awe and respect to his true "Hockey Daddy". Malkinstein has already accepted Crosby's God-like skills as superior to his, owing to his incredible good fortune of having the greatest leader in pro sports guiding him to back-to-back cup finals and a ring.

One question, though. Why did they have Kingsby handing off the torch to that pot-smoking snowboard broad that nobody gives a rat's ass about? Having her run the final leg in Halifax is a slap in the face to the greatest athlete in Canada who plays the greatest sport in the world.

So Gary B are you telling me the Pens won the Cup last year by needing 7 games to dispose of a garbage team? Some great accomplishment there Gary. You must be proud! It always amazes me when people belittle a team that they beat to win a title. Aren't they smart enough that just makes them look bad?

Lucky you are a minority of Pen fans. The others are smart enuff to know what a great effort it took for the Pens to win.

Hey Justin, talk about brain dead. How can Crosby talk about how much he enjoyed playing in Vancouver when the Olympics don't start for another couple of months. Why don't you tell everyone where you're from. I actually think any Bet-Man back tracking on the Sochi Olympics would be due to the likes of Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovylchuk et al. claiming they'll take whatever fine or suspension Gary wants to dish out to go play in Russia for the Olympcis in 2014. Still BS'ing about how Detroit was "robbed" how absolutely sad and pathetic you are. One of the tin foil hat conspiracy theorists that (as is evidenced on the Detroit-Dallas thread) equate a bad call against Detroit in a regular season game versus DALLAS as being a ploy to help Sid and the Pens! LMFAO!

300 whole yards... was Mario waiting at the end of the "run" with some cookies and milk like he does every night? Crosby is how old... and makes how much money... and yet he's still Mario's houseguest?

But seriously I can't wait to see how quickly Bettman flips his "we don't want NHL players in the 2014 Olympics" stance when Crosby says how much he enjoyed playing in Vancouver and wants to go to Sochi in 2014. NHL fans outside of those brain-dead, unemployed homers in Pittsburgh already know: whatever Sidney and Mario want, Sidney and Mario get.

No discipline for Sidney being the third man in and punching an opponent in the berries from behind? Done. Hal Gill smothering opponents like a wet blanket without any calls? Done. Twenty-plus seconds of 6 on 5 in the SCF? Done. Enjoy that tainted Cup (as well as those two Super Bowl gifts the last few years), Pittsburgh. The sooner you can admit it, the better off we'll all be.

What a Class Act! Way to go Sid! Carrying the Torch for your country, allowing tens of thousands of fans and members of the Canadian Millitary to enjoy the Cup. These haters can pi$$ up a rope. @16 Eddie G. What you need to admit is that the flyers are a joke. Good at being bridesmaids but that is it. Last I checked the Penguins have won THREE Cups since '91 and the flyers Jack $hit since Cars averaged 6 mpg and color TV was a luxury. What a laugh.

Morning Al, What's UP up north?

Pens Fan..............Actually the joke is on you. Sidney this, Sidney that and yet you just love it? It is not the kids fault. He is doing nothing wrong. It is the over-hyping media machine and fanatics like yourself that are the targets for "Crosby Bashing". I can name a few players off "garbage teams" better than Sid. Malkin for one. Not to mention the best player in the league right now Ovie....I could keep going but I think you get the point

Lets go pens. So now its "garbage " teams eh? Don't count you Lord Stanleys before you get them. There's a lot of hockey to be played yet, and a lot of things can happen. There is a theory that where a team stands around Thanksgiving, is a good indicator of where they will finish at the end.

oops! Meant to say it is "Not" good sportsmanship... I must be still pissed off about that Wings' goal that was disallowed last night, when the ref blew the whistle at least three seconds after the puck went into the net.

it really is sad the people who come on here and bash crosby for everything he does. Hes carrying the olympic torch and somehow people are talking trash.

For anyone who is complaining about crosby...Do you realize how much of a joke you look like when you come on here and talk @#$% on crosby for carrying the torch? i mean seriously, hate him all you want but its not going to change the fact that hes better than anyone on any garbage team you like especially the wings and flyers.

Glad to see the good doctor is on this thread also. Yea, Crosby for Secretary of Social Services. #7 Kevin B. It is good sportsmanship to wish ill on someone.. I'll bet you are like all of th eother Crosby haters. If Cindy played for your team, he'd be able to walk on water (before it is frozen) as far as you're concerned.

I love how every Crosby article inevitably ends up with a bunch of people hating on the kid. This isn't about Crosby vs Ovechkin. It's about a kid getting the chance to run with the Olympic Torch through his hometown. You don't have to like him. Trust me, people in Pittsburgh don't give a rat's ass what you think of Crosby. But lest you get ahead of yourselves with all the Ovechkin stroking, which one of the two has a Stanley Cup ring? Until AO proves he can actually get his team there, all he is is a phenomenal scorer who can't win the big games.

Wow. What a foulmouthed bunch of haters on this board.

#26 Oscar M - The Pens aren't the only bright spot in Pittsburgh. Perhaps you've heard of the Steelers? You know, the only team to have won 6 Super Bowls?

#7 kevin b - Crosby's not a leader? That'll be news to Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, who told Crosby after Game 7 that he showed "great leadership" during the series.

OSCAR M - 1) I doubt you play or have any comprehension of the game. 2) go back to the bl0wj0b concession you normaly work and dont comment on hockey. 3) Where is it that you live that you think Pittsburgh is so bad?
