Tejay van Garderen Biography
After achieving major success on the junior and under-23 circuits, van Garderen's stellar overall performance on the international level helped him secure a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. He earned top-five results at Paris-Nice, the Criterium du Dauphine, the Amgen Tour of California and the USA Pro Challenge to claim his first Olympic position. From 2002-2006, he won national junior titles twice in the time trial, plus the criterium and the cyclo-cross. Van Garderen has 10 junior national championships to his name since getting his start as a member of USA Cycling’s National Development Program. Though van Garderen has found his way to numerous podium finishes, perhaps the highlight of his cycling career came in 2011 when he competed in his first Tour de France. During the 8th stage of that prestigious race, van Garderen earned enough points to become the first American to wear the King of the Mountain jersey since Greg LeMond led the mountains classification during the 1986 event.
