Lauren Tamayo Biography

While Tamayo has long been considered one of the nation's most talented individual riders, her biggest asset in recent years has come in team events. That’s where she will hope to shine as part of the U.S. team pursuit squad during her first Olympic competition. A former under-23 national champion in the road race and time trial, Tamayo made a name for herself on the Elite level when she joined fellow 2012 Olympians Dotsie Bausch and Sarah Hammer in recording a world-record time of 3:19.569 to win the team pursuit at the 2010 Pan-American championships. The time was almost 3 seconds faster than the previous record of 3:22.552. With that effort, Tamayo, Bausch and Hammer became the world’s first women’s team pursuit squad to break the 3:20 mark. Tamayo also was part of a team pursuit group that finished fourth at the 2010 world championships and fifth at the 2012 worlds. She earned the nickname “La Diabla” or “The Devil,” because she is a terror on the bike and more reserved off it.
