Azizulhasni Awang Biography
Malaysia's flag bearer at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Awang became the highest-placing Asian cyclist at the Beijing Games when he finished eighth in the individual sprint. At the same Games, he was 10th in the keirin and a member of the Malaysian team sprint squad that finished seventh. He also was the first Malaysian to medal at the world championships when he earned a silver in the 2009 sprint event. Nicknamed “The Pocket Rocket” for his diminutive stature, Awang placed ninth in the keirin and a disappointing 27th in the sprint at the 2012 worlds. Despite both performances, Awang still has the potential to make his way onto the podium in London. A devout Muslim, Awang made news when he opted to postpone his Ramadan fast until after the 2012 Olympics. Fasting involves going without food and drink between sunrise and sunset every day for four weeks. Considering their training regime, Muslim athletes have the option of delaying their fasts until after a competition has been completed.
