Athlete Profile

  • Gold medalist at the 2004 Athens Games, Liu won in a world record-equaling 12.91 seconds. The medal was the first for a Chinese man in track and field since Zhu Jianhua earned the first, a high jump bronze, at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The 24-year-old Liu is favored to repeat as champion in his home country in 2008.
  • Liu now holds the world record in the 110 hurdles at 12.88 seconds, set at the Super Grand Prix meet in Lausanne, Switzerland in July 2006 .
  • Referring to his victory in Athens, Liu said that his performance "changes the opinion that Asian countries don't get good results in sprint races. I want to prove to all the world that Asians can run very fast."
  • Also won gold in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka as well as at the '07 Super Grand Prix.
  • Took first place in the 60m hurdles in the 2008 World Indoor Championships in 7.46. .. Liu defeated American Allen Johnson, one of his heroes, with an Asian and personal-best record time of 13.06 seconds at a meet in Osaka in May 2004.
  • Liu's legs are insured for $13.3 million by Chinese company Ping An.
