What will Michael Phelps swim in London?

Michael Phelps is committed as one can be to something four years away. The 14-time gold medalist says he plans on competing in the 2012 London Olympics, albeit with an easier, less-ambitious schedule than the one he just finished in Beijing. He's already broken the most prestigious mark in Olympic history, so what's next? What will Michael Phelps do as an encore?

He'll be 27 in London, an age that was once thought to be over-the-hill in swimming. (Although that sterotype was perpetuated because, up until a few years ago, there wasn't enough money in swimming for people to stick with the sport beyond their college years. Phelps doesn't have that problem, since he's making seven-figures from Speedo, Visa and all his other sponsors.) He could probably handle a slate of eight events again, but not with the same dominance he exhibited in Beijing. Look for Phelps to slice his individual events from five to three (or possible even two) to compliment the three relay events.

First to go will be the 400 IM. Phelps said his coach, Bob Bowman, promised that the 400 IM in Beijing would be the last he'd ever have to do if he set a world record. Phelps complied, so the 400 IM will likely be retired from the repertoire. The 200 will probably be dropped too, particularly if Ryan Lochte continues his ascension.

There's been talk of Phelps giving up his signature event, the 200 fly, but he hasn't lost the race since 2001. Phelps without the 200 fly would be like Michael Jordan without dunking. Adapting your game to fit your age is one thing. Abandoning your bread-and-butter is an entirely different one.

The 100 fly is the race that has given Phelps the most trouble over his career. He could cut the event or, with the IMs off his slate, could dedicate more time to training for the 100. Phelps says he wants to try new events though, which might put the 100 fly in jeopardy. Among the new events Phelps could try are the 100 free and 100 back.

Hmm, at first... I thought he is from U.K? All the crowds in UK are cheering for him instead of their own local hero.
Impressive!!! btw what is he doing in UK instead of back home?
    Go USA!

Michael Jordan was the best because he did everything the best... not just dunking. Thinking that Michael Jordan's best attribute was his dunk is exactly why U.S. players have fallen behind the Europeans in perimeter shooting.

I don't know about any other articles that may have been overly anti-Chinese, but I thought this was a good article. It will be interesting to see how Phelps does in 2012 and maybe he'll set a record in a different event! Watching him this time was amazing (to state the obvious).

He's going to be too old to win. I will post it last time in this sport blog. Good bye Chris Chase and good luck for your future, racist american.

Chris's most cogent observation was buried in the article. Olympic swimmers retired at 22-23 to get jobs. Swimming is Phelps' job, no medals, no endorsements. Most athletes don't peak until 27-31. Mike could be competitive through two Olympic cycles if he chose to continue his strict training regimen. Drop the 400 IM if he wishes, but the 200 IM is a lock as is the 100 free and back if he focuses on those events. I predict that he takes on a real challenge and works on the 100 and 200 breast; USA has nobody in those events who seem able to medal in 2012. He has nothing left to prove in the fly and should only pursue those events as safety events.

First off, bashing a writer based on what he wrote in the past are completely irrelevant. Secondly, those who accused the writer a racist are actually racist in themselves. Thirdly, those who bashed Chris Chase without valid base, only because his tone doesn't fit their taste, are losers :P. Those losers won't ever make it to be a Y! sport writer. Never! Last but not least, only idiots and losers who want to challenge any of the points I wrote above. So back off, stfu, and get a job, basher!
Now about Phelps. I don't think he could bring home as many gold medals home in the 2012 as he did last week. Four at best, two is great. Not because he is weak in the next four years but it'll be because we will have more and faster Phelps by then. :)

I see the communist party of China has logged in to post here today. It will be difficult for Phelps to top this performance, but he would be fun to watch no matter what. Maybe in the open water race or even as a triathlete..

I loved watching Phelps achieve his dream and goals at the Olympics. I've read a lot of articles written by Chris Chase and this is probably the better ones out there. The rest were bashing, narrow-minded, and biased views by him, if he actually exists... Anyways, we've never seen a picture of Chris Chase have we? Has he ever been to China at all? He doesn't want to reveal himself in a photo knowing he'll receive backlash by the Chinese community. That's my two cents.
