Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

The king may have been dethroned, but only for 24 hours. After a controversial loss to Paul Biedermann in yesterday's 200-meter freestyle, Michael Phelps regained his familiar spot atop the podium today at the World Swimming Championships in Rome, with a decisive victory in his signature event, the 200-meter butterfly.

Phelps broke his own world record in the win, eclipsing the mark he set at the Beijing Olympics by a half-second. Much like yesterday's result when Phelps lost to the upstart Biedermann (and his Arena X-Glide bathing suit), today's was fully expected. Even a buoyant, propelling suit isn't enough to beat Phelps in the 200 fly.

It was in this event that Phelps first emerged on the world scene, earning a bid to the 2000 Athens Olympics in the event as a 15-year old. Since the 2003 World Championships, Phelps has not lost the 200 fly in any major event. That streak continued in Rome, as he went wire-to-wire and won with ease, more than seven-tenths of a second ahead of the silver medalist.

If Phelps was out to prove something with that swim (and how could he not have been after the events of yesterday), he succeeded. He showed that he's still in peak form and that, even with a waist-high Speedo LZR, can still lap the field in certain events.

Whether or not the world record proves Phelps is better than he was in Beijing (as was suggested on TV) is up for debate. At the Olympics, the 200 fly came in the middle of the program. Because Phelps was such an overwhelming favorite (he went off at -5000 to win), he appeared to take the race fairly easy.

What isn't up for debate is that Michael Phelps is still the best swimmer in the world. The four-year winning streak may have been snapped yesterday, but maybe a new one began today.

This should have him prepared for Cavic. They should have never let him lose yesterday. He also surpassed Mark Sptiz's total world records with 34 world records. Say what you want about him but none of us has done what he has.

Well in a since, I have also because I have smoked weed also. I tell you what, if I had won 8 gold medals at an Olympics and signed endorsement deals that made me a milionaire, the media would have had enough stories to run for a couple of years. I guess that's why I haven't won 8 gold medals at an Olympics and am far from being a millionaire. After all that work he has put in, if that man wants to smoke a little weed, then fine for him; they giving weed out in California legally now and most of the people don't even need it. He proved today though that he still is the best, and his haters are so unhappy right now.

What is wrong with a guy wearing a regualr suit and proving he is the best naturally. These ridiculous suits are ruining the sport like steroids ruined baseball. Get rid of them period!

Kudos to Phelps for bouncing back. No one touches him in that event, suit or no suit. I don't think this WR necessarily means he's better now than he was in Beijing, though. He could probably have gone faster in that event at the Olympics had his goggles not filled with water. His time in the 200 free shows he isn't at his absolute best right now, though he's fairly close. If he's better in the 200 fly than last year, it's possibly because they've refined his butterfly even further in preparation for the 100 fly. I really can't wait to watch that 100 butterfly race. That's gonna be a classic - here's hoping Phelps can hit the wall at the 50m within a half-second of the leaders. It will also be interesting to watch the prelims and semis of that event, to see who makes a statement with their races.

    Right on!!!! Go Phelps!
He won and he wasn't wearing those full body suits. I still think he should have wore a speedo brief for this race, he would have still smashed his own world record. he is incredible

Actually "David P", you sound like a pretty good guy, in fact you'd probably be a good neighbor. But I save my athlete bashing for people who really deserve it, something more than a little poor sportmanship. Like George S. Patton said, " Americans are winners, they hate to lose", and that's why the French hate us, because we saved their skins so many times. Now bashing an athlete who drowned or hanged dogs, or one who beat the daylights out of his wife or girlfriend is where it's at. As a matter of fact, those guys should be put in the cage with all the UFC champs for a good beating, now that's attitude adjustment.

Hey eric are you a frog eater? yum yum
Why does the French navy have glass bottom boats? So they can see the old French navy.
What did it take, a couple days for Germany to take France?
Tough to be a Frenchy, now get over it and grow up.
Who the heck is whatup, can't you read? Where the hell is Normandy? Is that in France?

Yeah, I guess I'm a little bitter about the American TV network bashing us over the head with Phelps in the last Olympics...
Yes, it was a great record, but it was done at the expense of not showing a lot of other sports that were equally or more exciting than swimming...I think the networks should show ALL the sports on 3 or 4 channels (now that everyone has digital TV) and let the people decide what they want to watch...i'm bitter that i didn't get to see badminton or sailing or ?, just because the networks have to pick one American superstar (misty mae, etc.) and keep showing them over and over....it really doesn't matter if the athlete is a cool person or not, after showing them over and over, it's total overexposure and you just end up hating them...so i guess it's not the athlete's fault, it's just the networks have no concept of "overexposure' is a bad thing, actors do it all the time where they limit their public exposure so people get just enough of them and do not get sick of seeing their face....
I want to see all the Olympic events, no matter if americans are winning or not, and the American networks don't seem to want to cater to people like me (who i think are a huge audience, sometimes i think there are more people that want to see a variety of sports more than the "rah rah rah Americans are the best, only show sports where Americans are winning crowd". I think the network execs think most Americans are stupid and small minded, so sad..
