Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

Ali-Frazier. Magic-Bird. Michael-Milorad?

The greatest rivalry in swimming takes center stage Saturday at the World Championships in Rome, as Michael Phelps and Milorad Cavic meet in a 100-meter butterfly final for the first time since their epic battle in Beijing. In that race, Cavic led Phelps for 99.99 meters before a half-stroke finish from Phelps gave him a stunning, narrow victory and earned him a record-tying seventh gold medal.

Much has changed in the 351 days since that morning in China. Phelps became the most decorated Olympian in history the day after the 100m thriller and was feted the world over for his accomplishments. Five months later, after a picture of him smoking marijuana was circulated across the globe, he was suspended from the sport for three months. Upon his return he broke the world record in the 100m fly (which had been held by American Ian Crocker), but has had his aura of invincibility pierced in this meet after a decisive loss in the 200m freestyle.

Meanwhile, Cavic has been preparing solely for Saturday's rematch, quietly at first, and then quite vocally in recent days. He has stated that he, and not Phelps, won that race in Beijing (argueing that he touched the wall first but that the touch pad didn't trigger) and has spoken of how Phelps is beatable. Then, in one of today's semifinals, Cavic went out and snatched the world record away from Phelps.

And then there are the suits.

High-tech swimsuits have dominated both conversation and the medal podium in Rome. A preposterous 29 world records have fallen, some courtesy of swimmers who didn't even make the semifinals of that event at the Olympics.

Sadly, the suits will once again take center stage tomorrow, as Cavic will be wearing an Arena X-Glide, while Phelps is stuck with the inferior Speedo LZR. Fearing that a potential victory might be tainted, Cavic has tried to goad Phelps into wearing one of the polyurethane-based suits, but to no avail.

"If Mike wants an Arena, he just has to say it," Cavic said. "If he wants a Jaked and they don't want to give it to him free, I'll buy it for him. He has options. I think in the media it's been portrayed that he has no option, he has to swim for (Speedo). It's a complete lie."

For all his bluster, Cavic is speaking the truth.

Wearing the LZR and suffering from its inferiority is almost becoming a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy for Phelps. If he loses, he has an out. It was the suit's fault. If he wears one of those fasts suits and loses? Suddenly the great Michael Phelps is fallible. It's safer to stay with the LZR. He's a hero if he wins and has a built-in excuse if he doesn't.

But Cavic is simplifying things too much when he says that Phelps has no option. He is beholden to Speedo and if they say he can't switch suits, he's stuck. This isn't about loyalty, it's about business.

Of course, if Speedo was smart, they'd let Phelps wear the Arena suit for this race. Because what's worse for the company? Having its star athlete compete in another suit (one which will be banned five months from tomorrow) or having its star athlete lose a race because he was wearing a Speedo suit?

Isn't this a no-brainer? The minor-PR hit Speedo will take if they allowed Phelps to change for a race will be nothing compared to the hit the company will take perception-wise if swimmers think the product is second-class. Heck, it might even benefit Speedo, sort of like when the Macy's Santa tells everyone to go to Gimbel's in the classic film Miracle on the 34th Street.

In the end, though, Phelps will likely stay in the LZR and lose because of it. As we saw in Beijing, Cavic is every bit as good in the 100m fly as Phelps. The suit will make him a little bit better. He wins the rematch, unless Phelps has another miracle in him.

Speed has allowed it's swimmers to use other suits for this meet. Phelps declined. Cavic said that Phelps is doing it out of loyalty. Cavic didn't even mention if Phelps might use the suit as an out if Phelps loses. It is about business, not Speedo's contract with Phelps, but rather the "Phelps" brand/image.

He has some right to be jelous. He is a swimer. He is not looking for Blimpies endorsement. He swims 100 fly faster than Phelps. He lost in Beijing under some very strange circumstances (did you see that race?).
What is it that makes you think Phelps has any right to claim this discipline as his own?

Maybe the fact that the last time anyone beat Phelps in the butterfly and a major meet was Ian Crocker in 2005. In fact, Crocker is the ONLY guy to beat Phelps in the butterfly since 2001, having done it at Worlds in 03 and 05. Crocker is no longer swimming. That's left Phelps as the king of the butterfly, until someone actually shows they can beat him at it.
My gut says, however, that Phelps will lose this race to Cavic. I don't think its realistic to expect Cavic to go faster, but if he goes out in 22.83 like he did in semis, it's going to be VERY tough for Phelps to catch him. Phelps is faster on the second 50, but not by a full second. Phelps will have to go out in 23.3 or 23.4 the first 50m in order to have a shot. I'm looking forward to seeing if one of them can crack 50.

uh Cavic, instead of pouting around your X-Glide, why don't YOU get into the LZR leggings that Phelps will be wearing tomorrow? then there'll be nothing to complain about!

100m butterfly WR should have the name X-Glide, Arena. Not Cavic, Milorad.

Jerry Y that's what I was thinking lol. You know what this is just another sport gone bad because of "enhancements" of some sort.
Records mean nothing anymore. They used to be a way to compare contemporary greats with past greats but now that's gone

this is ridiculous....it's like tennis player complaining about the racket being inferior.....you always have to choice to play with the better racket....you might not make millions of dollars doing so but at least you have a choice.
So Phelps has the choice to use other suits but hey.....he wants money too...it's so hypocritical of him. Actually I can't believe he is even bringing it up. And all of you that are attacking Cavic here think about your comments before posting them....everything Cavic said is completely true and valid!!

Vladimir, these suits are going to be banned. That implies they are "cheating". It's like when all those baseball players took steroids before they started testing for them.
If Cavic feels he's better. use the suit he used at the olympics.

Basketballfan88, Michael was guilty of this same "cheating" last year when the LZR was the best suit in the business; which other swimmers didn't have thus he had an unfair advantage from the start. He won those 8 golds in that suit. Now there is a better one that Cavic has, and if he wins Michael will be calling him a cheap winner. Maybe he is, but if he is, then so were the 8 golds that Michael won last year because he did the very same thing.

Jerry Y i am with you. Cavic should stop talking smack and wear the same LZR leggings as Phelps then we will see who is the fastest. Cavic seems to think changing suits should not a big deal for Phelps. He needs to step up to the plate and let his swimming do the talking. The last time i checked the medal count it wasn't real close... Cavic is the one who has something to prove. He should shut up and strap on the LZR...

The LZR suit improved his hydrodynamics if I'm not mistaken, while the X-glide and the Jaked suits actually increase your buoyancy. If a differently shaped baseball bat (within rules) helps a batter come around with his swing, that's different than the same ball player injecting himself with something that makes him hit harder. I think the fact that the suits are going to be banned next year tells us where they fall in the spectrum.

Daniel G: You, sir, are incorrect. Nearly every medalist at the Games last year wore a LZR Racer. Therefore, Phelps gained no advantage from the suit he was wearing. In the 100 fly, Cavic wore a LZR bodysuit in the 100 fly, Phelps wore leggings, and Phelps still out-touched him. So if anyone benefitted from the suit in that one, it was Cavic. In fact, the only individual event final at the Olympics in which Phelps wore a LZR bodysuit was the 200 free - in the others, he wore the leggings only. And not only did he win the 200 free by nearly two seconds, but every man in the finals of that race also wore a LZR Racer. Equating Phelps' performance then to what is happening now is comparing apples to oranges. People need to stop saying stuff when they have no idea what they're talking about.

Daniel G. I believe that everyone was on equal par at the olympics otherwise trust me these swimmers would have called phelps a complete hypocrite once his coach uttered those words about threatening to pull phelps.
the new suit will be banned. so wearing it in advance is just as bad.

Whatever you want to say about Cavic you need to remember that all of us thought he won that race until we saw results. Yes it turned out Phelps out-touched him but he did not exactly beat him.
It does look like Phelps is taking the high road where if he loses he has an excuse.

Publicity = Money. Cavic and Phelps are likely to enjoy financial rewards from this controversy. The notion that Phelps is less than honorable because he plans to wear a Speedo is naive. Phelps's integrity does not rest on one race, nor does it rest on his getting caught smoking pot. He's still in the prime of his life and tomorrow's 100-meter butterfly is a blip on his career.
The notion that athletes should not let themselves be swayed by financial consideration is like "Just Say No:" Pure Poppycop...part of the tyranny people with wealth foist on those without it. Personal dignity is always a consideration, but people who know what it's like to be dirt-poor understand why it's not the only consideration.
Phelps has yet to cross completely from adolscence to adulthood: at 24 he's still got lots to figure out. He's lucky to have a mother who did right by him, fortunate to have her and others to advise him, not fortunate to have the public get hysterical about Phelps' minutia.
I hope Cavic isn't measuring himself based on this race. If he is, winning the race will not rescue him. He should surround himself with more well-adjusted people.
