Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

A friend of mine misplaced his wedding ring a few months ago and almost had a nervous breakdown before we helped him find it; losing that all-important band can make people do crazy things. That's why I'm even more impressed with Kerri Walsh's ability to focus after reading that she lost her wedding ring during Sunday morning's match against Japan.

According to the AP report, Walsh went up for a block at some point during the match and the ring flew off her hand. Fortunately, some broadcasters noticed what had happened, and were able to go back to the tape to show officials where they thought the ring might be.

Even with the video assistance, finding the ring amongst 17,000 tons of sand wasn't going to be an easy process. Especially when you consider that during each match, volunteers rake the sand to make the playing surface a little smoother, so that ring could have gone anywhere. After the day's matches had finished, volunteers combed the area with metal detectors until they located the missing band.

"The problem is, we rake the court," said Peter Paul Hreszczuk, the FIVB official manning the metal detector. "We heard a few noises; a few were false alarms. When we found it, it was pretty much under the net."

According to the report, Walsh was scheduled to get her ring back at some point today, and a meeting was set up with the volunteer who found it, obviously so that Walsh could thank them.

I think Kerri deserves a lot of credit for staying composed and finishing the match. I know if I lost anything that valuable, I'd either be digging in the sand trying to find the ring, or worrying about it constantly until I did. She didn't do either of those things, and that's why she and Misty May-Treanor are one step closer to another gold medal.

My grandmother lost her stone out of her ring right before leaving for florida one year in crushed gravel in her driveway. I know we looked hard for it but didn't find it and don't know what she went through over the winter. Anyways it sounds like a fake story but when she came back in the spring she opened her door to her car and stepoped out and picked up the ring. I would think it's all a lie if I hadn't been there myself for both events. Just like it came from a movie or story book. I still have it today. Even though she has gone with God. So thats great that someone found her ring and it does make people a little uptight for such a thing.

Who cares about a wedding ring? I have been married for 11 years now, and the ring is not what makes the marriage. Instead a marriage is made from what is truly in the heart. If one keeps their spouse in their heart, and no amount of money will ever matter.

What does this have to do with anything? Olympic coverage is all about the human interest and never about the sports. You know the sob story, but you don't ever hear about the competition itself.
May and Walsh are amazing atheletes that are pretty much set the bar in this nacient sport, and we have to read about her losing her wedding ring, the only detail about the match is that they won.

That's lovely, heartofgold. I'm going to go home now and listen to Delilah's radio show. Maybe watch some Dr. Phil or a Hugh Grant movie marathon.
Any man will tell you that their wife would strangle them if they lost the wedding ring.
Personal Story: I lost my wedding ring on my honeymoon while swimming with stingrays. We found it on the floor of the Caribbean after about 3 minutes of frantic snorkeling. We brought underwater cameras, and we have a shot of me petting a stingray with the ring floating away.
Sidenote: Misty May was my 2004 Olympic Crush. This year I'm going with Natalie Coughlin.

One question??? What the heck is she doing wearing a ring while playing volleyball. Didn't someone teach her it is not wise to wear jewelry while playing sports. She could easily break or sprain that finger and then the ring would need to be cut off. JEWELRY AND SPORTS DON'T MIX.

Know a couple that after 65 years have never take off the rings. Not even at death will they be removed.
Maybe this is where Kerri Walsh is coming from.

Everybody looks for their 15 minutes of fame, then we have the goofs of the world that use forums such as this to say some really stupid stuff.
I think it's great that with the work of the media and volunteers that Kerri Walsh was able to get her ring back. I know I thought I had lost my ring and my husband went nuts, he even went out and bought a metal detector. In the end the ring was safe in the house, I had just put in a place I had forgotten about.

Why was she wearing the ring in the first place? It should have been under lock and in a safe place until the match ended.

If her ring was that important to her, take it off for the match and put it back on right after the match is over, that way you will not lose it.

If she needs a new ring, I can get her an inexpensive one at a garage sale. It won't be gold or look anything like the original, but it is the thought that counts. Plus, the Batman symbol is pretty popular now that Dark Knight is theaters near you!

I agree - she should have taken it off - but what a great story.
My ex's band flew off on our honeymoon while he was getting our suitcases out of the trunk. Should have taken as a sign right then.

I thought I saw something happen when she had hit the ball. She looked down at her hand, then on the ground briefly. Her and Misty took a break in their chairs right after and Kerri told her about it. Wow, she stayed focus on the game like it never happened! As a team those two women rock!

Losing a wedding ring is very traumatic. I lost mine in Vegas this year and stood on the street and cried, but a cleaning lady at Harrah's found it and turned it in. Mine is very unique and could never have been duplicated after 39 years. But I agree, she probably shouldn't have been wearing it that day, especially if it was loose on her finger, as mine was. I'm glad they went to the trouble to find it for her!
