Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

The odds haven't changed much in the 13 months we've been handicapping the race to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. (Check out our previous editions here and here.) With the IOC's vote on Friday, Fourth-Place Medal will take an in-depth look this week at each of the four bid cities before presenting our final prediction at the end of the week, hours before the announcement. First up, Chicago.

Pros: Will have been 20 years in between Summer Olympics in United States/North America ... Obama is said to have improved America's image in Europe (where a majority of IOC voters are from) and will be attending the vote ... American television rights are up for bid in 2016, going to Chicago would spark massive bidding war between NBC and ESPN.

Cons: Anti-American bias still prevalent in the IOC ... would be third American Olympics in 32 years ... tepid support in Chicago, with only 47 percent of residents stating that they want the Games to come to the city (versus 45 percent against) ... bid is heavily reliant on public transit.

Biggest plus: Looming United States TV rights negotiations are bound to appeal to the greed of IOC members. (It's always about money.)

Biggest minus: Many members think the USOC takes an unfair cut of those dollars, which may help breed even more resentment of the United States than already exists in the notoriously Eurocentric organization. (See parenthetical above.)

Famous schmoozers: Barack and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Richard Daley

Twitter-length summary: A vote for Chicago is a vote for the United States, which may be the bid's biggest (and only) problem. Still, CHI is one of favorites.

Odds: 8/11

Obamas should be worrying about real issues, not their damn egos and the Olympics. He needs to straighten out his priorities.

This is nerve wrecking but in a great way.now i know how it feels when other cities like london, sochi, vancover, torino and athens were when they waited for their name to be called to host their olympics!

Having just listened to the presentation, I sensed the yearning and the Obama's personal testimony but they did not leave an image of what Chicago would be like during the games. Are they going to widen the streets? Add new subways and rail-lines? What beach? That little strip of sand around Lake Michigan. And Michelle with her sob story about the south side. The south side has high gang, drug, and crime rates. All the IOC has to do is look at the recent videotape. And to house the athletes at the University of Wisconsin? 55 miles away? Oh, that would be a haul.
Chicago may have the diversity but it is an older city with terrible transportation problems. Obama talks about beautiful parks in the middle of the city. Where? Lake Shore Dr. is on the edge of the city. And the shooting question had to do with peace and quiet. No one addressed it. Chicago is not a peaceful and quiet city.
They presented a what we call "a fluff piece" and of course Obama brought up inaugeration night and tried to politicize his pitch. Just by watching you can tell member's of the IOC were puzzled. Too much was focused on the para olympic games. Well what about hard working non-disabled athletes who want to compete in a city they will enjoy without the headaches of a large midwestern city? The lake seem to be the only physical description anyone could give. Rio has the beaches, Madrid has the architecture, and Tokyo has state of the art everything and scenic views (water and mountains). Chicago's bid was baffling if not puzzling. The presenters should have shown the IOC all aspects of the city and failed to do that. Instead they acted like a bunch of dreamers and presented little.

having the olympics in the US would generate tons of revenue and jobs from now til 2016. Its an investment into the US future (the 1 day being out of the country)

I agree with JustMe - that money earmarked for the Olympics could be better spent. I live just outside of Chicago and EVERYONE I know does NOT want this here. No trying to sound un-American but I don't want my taxes inflated (look up Milenium Park and other Chicago over-budgeted projects) and all the construction hassle over the next 7 years! Heck, Da Mayor can't even get the streets plowed properly during our winters! Go Rio!

I think president should be dealing with things that will affect this economy now not in 2016, yes getting an olympic bid for the city of chicago could be huge, providing jobs, etc.... but that is for chicago what about the rest of us, i want to know what he is doing to help us now?? While the president was in Denmark presenting his Olympic bid, there was other business that should have handled first. Like the meeting in Geneva, to figure out what to do and how to handle the Iran nuclear plants... but i can see how the president thought olympics was WAY more importent.... My other question and people from chicago can help me out here. If Chicago gets the olympics and all the new buildings are built for them, then WHAT, what happens after that how will the city of Chicago use them. Rough estimate of population in chicago is what 2,000,000? and In Athens Greece home of the 2004 Games the population was 4,000,000 or so, and as of today they are not using hardly any of there buildings they built for the olympics. So for me as someone leaving outside the Chicago area, I dont think it would be well worth it to get the Olympics here, but then again in then 80's we had the olympics at Lake Placid NY, and our country wasnt doing so well at the time, and after that we kinda of slowly eeked our way out of the depressions. heres hoping our economy doesnt stay tanked until 2016, and we need an olympic bid to pull us out.

Much of the information in these posts are completely inaccurate...the Athens metropolitan population is around 4 million, but Chicago's metropolitan population is over double that at well over 8 million (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_urban_areas).
Chicago does have huge parks in the middle of the city - Millenium Park and Grant park are both comparable to Central Park in NYC.
Chicago does have many very nice beaches spread throughout the city on the Lake. These beaches are awesome places to visit in the summer.
Chicago's public transportation system and infrastructure are some of the best in the country.
The gangster image is not reality in Chicago as the city has changed a lot in the last 25+ years. I have raised a family in the middle of the city for the last 5 years and have never felt threatened by crime.

godot_3 ... you dont know how to read do you? maybe obama will give more money to help the likes of you read, i never once said anything how it is bad that he went to Denmark to speak to the IOC for two days.. my only problem was that it was at the same time as the meetings in Geneva where all the countries that were suppose to meet had someone represent them there except the US because ours was in Denmark. should he have went over there yes he should have went to denmark, if it was at a different time then the convention on Geneva, prioritize mr, president....
