The odds haven't changed much in the 13 months we've been handicapping the race to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. (Check out our previous editions here and here.) With the IOC's vote on Friday, Fourth-Place Medal will take an in-depth look this week at each of the four bid cities before presenting our final prediction at the end of the week, hours before the announcement. First up, Chicago.
Pros: Will have been 20 years in between Summer Olympics in United States/North America ... Obama is said to have improved America's image in Europe (where a majority of IOC voters are from) and will be attending the vote ... American television rights are up for bid in 2016, going to Chicago would spark massive bidding war between NBC and ESPN.
Cons: Anti-American bias still prevalent in the IOC ... would be third American Olympics in 32 years ... tepid support in Chicago, with only 47 percent of residents stating that they want the Games to come to the city (versus 45 percent against) ... bid is heavily reliant on public transit.
Biggest plus: Looming United States TV rights negotiations are bound to appeal to the greed of IOC members. (It's always about money.)
Biggest minus: Many members think the USOC takes an unfair cut of those dollars, which may help breed even more resentment of the United States than already exists in the notoriously Eurocentric organization. (See parenthetical above.)
Famous schmoozers: Barack and Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Richard Daley
Twitter-length summary: A vote for Chicago is a vote for the United States, which may be the bid's biggest (and only) problem. Still, CHI is one of favorites.
Odds: 8/11

Chicago may have the diversity but it is an older city with terrible transportation problems. Obama talks about beautiful parks in the middle of the city. Where? Lake Shore Dr. is on the edge of the city. And the shooting question had to do with peace and quiet. No one addressed it. Chicago is not a peaceful and quiet city.
They presented a what we call "a fluff piece" and of course Obama brought up inaugeration night and tried to politicize his pitch. Just by watching you can tell member's of the IOC were puzzled. Too much was focused on the para olympic games. Well what about hard working non-disabled athletes who want to compete in a city they will enjoy without the headaches of a large midwestern city? The lake seem to be the only physical description anyone could give. Rio has the beaches, Madrid has the architecture, and Tokyo has state of the art everything and scenic views (water and mountains). Chicago's bid was baffling if not puzzling. The presenters should have shown the IOC all aspects of the city and failed to do that. Instead they acted like a bunch of dreamers and presented little.

Chicago does have huge parks in the middle of the city - Millenium Park and Grant park are both comparable to Central Park in NYC.
Chicago does have many very nice beaches spread throughout the city on the Lake. These beaches are awesome places to visit in the summer.
Chicago's public transportation system and infrastructure are some of the best in the country.
The gangster image is not reality in Chicago as the city has changed a lot in the last 25+ years. I have raised a family in the middle of the city for the last 5 years and have never felt threatened by crime.
