Fourth-Place Medal, a Yahoo! Sports blog covering the Summer Olympics in Beijing

It's not especially surprising that Chicago won't be named the host city of the 2016 Olympics. We predicted earlier today on Fourth-Place Medal that Rio would get the nod. However, it is a shock that the Second City was eliminated in the first round of voting, a sharp slap in the face to the United States and, in particular, President Barack Obama, who had travelled to Copenhagen to stump for his adopted city's candidacy.

Oddsmakers had favored the city since the four bid cities were announced in June 2008 and the announcement that Obama would appear at the IOC vote was thought by many to put Chicago over the top. It was all for naught. Chicago was eliminated on the first ballot, while Madrid and Rio de Janeiro advanced to the final round of voting.

The perception will be that Barack Obama's attempt to play the role of conquering hero was a failure and, to some degree, it was. He didn't accomplish what he set out to do. But the frenzy of his arrival in Copenhagen always obscured the fact that the IOC has constantly shown an anti-American tilt. Obama's fame wasn't enough to overcome that. The president's supposed popularity with the general European public means nothing. He needed to sway the 99 first round voters. They proved to be a hard sell.

For a number of reasons, most having to do with the root of all evil (money), the IOC has held a grudge against America for the better part of the last decade. Because of this, today's vote wasn't a vote against Obama or against Chicago's worthiness to hold the Olympics. It was a vote against the United States.

Obama is a loser on almost every political issue. It's no wonder he is a loser in Denmark.

wish this article mentioned more about the start of the issue that apparently happened 10 years ago. Also...this article fails to mention that obama's appearance was very short, that he left before the vote was even finished!

Anyone with any common sense would realize how idiotic this would have been. Obama flies 9000 miles (one way) just to lose out. Way to build our clout.

Obama can convince the american people which I include myself to spend our grandchildren future earnings in this presidency. Well the international committee is not buying the Obama spech. We made a mistake already the Olympic committee is not......... We are still loosing the opportunitty for a better presidency and the joy of an amercian city hosting the Olympics....

Hate to admit it but I have to agree - that was a vote against the US. We have some work to do to reestablish ties to the global community (the IOC scandal in Salt Lake City didn't help either). It was good to see President Obama lay it all on the line. Shows the type of leadership and character that a gold medal winning Olympian like Michael Jordan apparently lacks.

The unemployment rate is a reflection of things that started long before we voted Obama into office. remember we did vote him into office. People can complain all they want, but the fact is that the PEOPLE decided who they wanted as president. Which is weird because that's exactly what our democratic system is designed to do.

Lets see, since 1980, there have been 17 summer and winter olympics and US got 4 of them (Lake Placid, LA, Atlanta, SLC), that is almost 25% which went to one country! Not a single country was given two games - When Russia holds 2014 winter Olympics, it will be 34 years between their two games. Bloggers like you, only increase prejudice without presenting facts, just empty statements (the IOC has held a grudge against America for the better part of the last decade) no explanation, no facts, just rabble rousing. You completely overlooked the fact that other cities may have made better presentation. If you want to enlighten yourself, go read Jim Litke's column from AP, he being a resident of Chicago and a journalist with credentials, not a lampoon blogger.

Like Obama even needs to be flying 9000 miles to give his attention to this issue given the problems that we have in our country. Obama may have fooled the US people, but he's not going to fool the Olympic Committee with his used car salesman tactics. He just wasted good money and time going out there when there was no way his phoney-self was going to make a difference.

Yes let's all blame Obama for our previous President putting us in debt with the war, letting financial institutions run wild, and screwing our economy. You guys need to wake up and have some reality for breakfast.

Why is Madrid even there? Oh that's right the IOC has to have their cronies host the Games every other time if not every time. London, followed by Madrid, and then Prague, to be topped off by Stuttgart. The rest of the world? You mean there are other places besides Europe and the USA?

Amazing. If Chicago had won, this article would be extolling Obama's virtues and amazing power. But, when his baby loses, it's not his fault. Must be nice to always get the credit but never the blame. Reminds me of too many who want the rights of adulthood without the responsibility.

Can you imagine the corruption that would have occured if Chicago would have won? The unions would have been killing people to get the contracts to upgrade the facilities and over charge for work done. Plus they would strike a year before the Olympics if they all didn't get a pay raise. Chicago politicians would have been lined up with their hands out before awarding contracts. It would have been fun to watch the Chicago political machine in action!

As for the Olympic vote, I also agree with this blog post. The US simply just isn't in a good light right now...especially internationally. With all of the past scandals (Salt Lake City and bomb threats in Atlanta '96), paired with the recent invasion of Iraq, it was probably really tough to for the IOC to see the US in a good light. Hopefully, in a few years, that will change...and the US will once again be seen as a friendly place to be, not an arrogant country that bullies others around.

"Anti-American tilt?" I think that if it is there, it is significantly outweighed by the prostitutes that make up the IOC, and which site offers the most money. Didn't the IOC have an "anti-France" tilt during the voting for 2012?
The United States has hosted 4 Summer Olympics, 4 Winter Olympics. The last two in the U.S. have been hampered by a bribery scandal (Salt Lake City), and a bombing (Atlanta).
I'd like to see Rio get it - like FIFA who gave South Africa the World Cup, let's mix up the hosts.
