  • Cemented his status as one of the greatest distance swimmers in history by winning the men's 1500m freestyle races at both the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and the 2004 Games in Athens. He also holds the world record in that event.
  • He is the third swimmer to win consecutive 1500m golds, and in Beijing has a chance to become the first male swimmer to win three straight golds in the same event.
