- Yang is best known for his involvement in a major gymnastics judging controversy at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. After winning the bronze medal in the men's all-around competition, he and the Korean federation filed a protest, claiming the degree of his parallel bars routine was incorrectly judged and that he had been docked one-tenth of a point unfairly, possibly costing him the gold medal - won by Paul Hamm of the United States. The International Gymnastics Federation agreed with Yang, but could not change the results because he had not protested his score immediately after it was given.
- Yang also placed 10th on the horizontal bar in Athens and helped the South Korean men's team finish fourth.
- Competed in his first international event in 2001, when he placed 13th all-around at the World Championships in Ghent, Belgium.
- Won a silver medal two years later at the 2003 Asian Championships in Guangzhou, China.
- He placed eighth all-around at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, one year after finishing seventh all-around in the Worlds at Aarhus, Denmark.
