- His mother, Heide Ecker-Rosendahl, won gold medals in the long jump and the 4x100 relay, and a silver in the pentathlon in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. His father, John Ecker, played basketball for John Wooden at UCLA from 1969-71.
- Jumped a height of 6.00m in an indoor event in Dortmund in 2001, placing him in the "six-meter club" among pole vaulters.
- Finished fifth at the 2004 Olympics in Athens with a jump of 5.75 and eighth at the 2000 Games in Sydney with a jump of 5.80.
- Won the bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka with a jump of 5.81. Failed to advance past qualifying in 2005 in Helsinki, but finished 11th in 2001 in Edmonton (5.65) and fourth in 1999 in Seville.
