Tina Charles Biography
The youngest player on the women's U.S. hoops team other than former UConn teammate Maya Moore, Charles joins Sylvia Fowles as the only true centers on the roster and it's likely she plays a key role. She started six games as the Americans went 9-0 at the 2010 world championships to qualify for London, finishing third on the team in scoring (10.7) and second in rebounding (4.8). The No. 1 overall pick in 2010 made the All-WNBA second team as a rookie and was a first-teamer in 2011 after averaging a league-best 11.0 rebounds while ranking fifth with 17.6 points per game and second to Fowles in blocks (1.8). Charles led the Huskies to a second straight national championship in 2010, closing her collegiate career with 78 straight wins before being drafted by the Connecticut Sun and winning WNBA rookie of the year honors. Her 22 double-doubles in 2010 were a league record, and she upped that mark to 23 the following season. Few players are better in the post or under the boards rebounding, though she also has a decent touch and can hit the mid-range jumper. Charles has spent the past two WNBA offseasons playing in Russia and was the EuroLeague's second-leading rebounder and scorer.
