Carmelo Anthony Biography
Anthony joins Miami's LeBron James as the only American who will be appearing in a third Olympics, but no one on the current roster has donned a Team USA uniform more than the New York Knicks star. He's played for 10 U.S. teams and appeared in 59 games, averaging 15.3 points. In fact, his national career has been significantly more successful than his NBA tenure. He's won a playoff series in only one of his nine professional seasons, but his Team USA honors include two gold medals and two bronzes - one apiece in the Olympics - as well as a silver for an American youth team alongside James. Anthony scored 11.0 per game starting for the 2008 gold-medal winning Olympic squad. His 21.2 scoring average in the preceding FIBA Americas Championship set a U.S. record for an Olympic qualifying tournament, and he shot 61.3 percent as the Americans went 10-0. Anthony was the 2006 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year after helping the U.S. to bronze at the world championships, averaging a team-high 19.9 points. He made the 2004 Olympic team following his rookie season - like Wade and James - but played limited minutes as the U.S. went 5-3 and settled for bronze. He's coming off a seventh straight season of finishing among the NBA's top 10 scorers but averaged 22.6 points - his worst since 2004-05 - and his 43.0 percent field-goal shooting was his lowest since his rookie season. Still, the native New Yorker - he was born in Brooklyn before moving to Baltimore as a child - is regarded as one of the world's best when it comes to putting the ball in the basket, regularly hitting from outside but always able to get into the lane for easier shots. His defense leaves something to be desired, but Anthony does provide help on the glass - he has a career rebounding average of 6.3.
