The Caps didn't have a whole lot of room to sign a bevy of free agents on July 1. But they certainly made the most of their one transaction.

The signing of right wing Mike Knuble to a two-year deal is a clever move by GM George McPhee similar to his acquiring Sergei Fedorov late in the 2007-08 season. This team desperately needs a physical presence, someone who gives the Caps some muscle in front.

The former Flyer will likely go on to the first line to take the place of Viktor Kozlov, giving the Caps a few things that will help the offense. He's big (6-foot-3, 230), can score (at least 21 goals in each of the last six years), knows how to win (played on a lot of good teams, like the 1998 Stanley Cup champion Red Wings).

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is the NHL's most valuable player for the second straight year after leading the league with 56 goals. Ovechkin beat fellow Russian finalists Evgeni Malkin of Pittsburgh and Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk on Thursday night.
