The Sharks put an exclamation point on their recent strong play on Saturday night by shutting out the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins with a performance that typified the way San Jose has played recently.

The Sharks are downright stingy on defense, having allowed only seven goals in the last seven games, and it's not by accident.

"Puck possession ... I think it's our faceoffs—we're starting with the puck quite a bit," center Scott Nichol said. "We're such a big team, we work the boards really well, and we don't spend a lot of time in our own end. When we do we don't make the Hail Mary pass, we chip it off the glass or use the boards. It might not be pretty, but it's effective."

San Jose struggled to find continuity and consistency while going 3-3-1...

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout to lift Detroit to a 2-1 win over San Jose, snapping the Sharks' six-game winning streak.
