The unrestricted free agent spotlight continues to shine on Radim Vrbata.

Negotiations remain ongoing between Vrbata's camp and Coyotes general manager Don Maloney. The right wing's future with the team looked extremely bright until a late-season slump, but he did have a career year after being obtained in an off-season trade. Vrbata has said repeatedly that he wants to return, and even though there has been no sense of urgency, it's probable he will be back.

With the emphasis on youth, mixed in with a few core-group veterans, the status of other unrestricted free agents remains cloudy.

Left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist is unrestricted, and even though his offensive numbers are low, coach Wayne Gretzky likes his attitude and approach to penalty-killing.

The Phoenix Coyotes signed Kevin Porter, winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the nation's top college hockey player, on Monday. Porter, 22, completed his senior season at Michigan this year and was second in NCAA Division I in scoring with 33 goals and 33 assists in 43 games. The Wolverines' captain finished his college career with 85 goals and 98 assists.

The Phoenix Coyotes signed Michigan forward Chad Kolarik on Sunday. Kolarik, 22, was the Coyotes' seventh-round draft pick of the Coyotes in 2004. He had 30 goals and 26 assists this season to help the Wolverines reach the Frozen Four for the 23rd time in school history. Kolarik was third in the nation in points and fourth in goals.
