The Coyotes got the players they targeted in the first two rounds of the draft in defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and right wing Chris Brown. They look to be two integral parts of the puzzle in the team's future plans.

"I was pleased with the way the draft weekend evolved for us," said general manager Don Maloney.

The Coyotes also drafted goaltender Michael Lee; right wing Jordon Szwarz and defenseman Justin Weller (fourth), and left wing Evan Bloodoff (sixth).

The Phoenix Coyotes signed defenseman Shaun Heshka to a one-year contract Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 24-year-old Heshka was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the Coyotes' seventh-round draft choice (187th overall) in last month's NHL draft. Heshka had three goals and 23 assists in 77 games last season with Manitoba of the American Hockey League.

The Phoenix Coyotes have signed left wing Stefan Meyer to a one-year contract. The 23-year-old Meyer was acquired on June 19 from the Florida Panthers for the rights to center Steven Reinprecht. Meyer had 18 goals and 22 assists in 65 games last season with Rochester of the AHL. He played in four games for the Panthers during the 2007-08 season.

Free agent defenseman Adrian Aucoin has signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, giving the team a veteran presence on and off the ice. Coyotes general manager Don Maloney called Aucoin an "an intelligent, puck-moving defenseman who will help improve our power play and bring leadership to our locker room." The 29-year-old Fiddler had 11 goals and six assists in 77 games last season for the Nashville Predators. He has 45 goals and 48 assists in 305 career NHL games over six seasons, all with Nashville.

The NHL believes Jerry Reinsdorf can succeed where Jerry Moyes failed as owner of the financially ailing Phoenix Coyotes.
