Friday’s Three Stars: Devils head to Final; Brodeur, Kovalchuk the difference in Game 6 (Puck Daddy)

No. 1 Star: Ilya Kovalchuk, New Jersey Devils
This time last year, Kovalchuk was a punchline, a cautionary tale of what happens when you spend an untold fortune on one guy. Now, he looks like he's worth it. Kovalchuk had a game-high 6 shots, he scored a beautiful powerplay goal, and he picked up an assist on Adam Henrique's game-winner in a 3-2 Game 6 victory over the New York Rangers, sending the Devils to the Stanley Cup Final.
No. 2 Star: Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils
Brodeaur kicked it old-school Friday night, looking like the difference-maker he once was in the Devils' victory. He made 33 saves in the win. This one was my favourite:

No. 3 Star: Adam Henrique, New Jersey Devils
Henrique scored his second series winner of these playoffs, banging home a rebound just 1:03 into overtime. He also added 3 blocked shots.

Devils eliminate Rangers in Game 6, ending fear of the past, setting course for the future (Puck Daddy)

It was all so familiar.
The New Jersey Devils' 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Rangers was like watching a clip show. The entire affair looked stitched together from old memories.
First, there was that 2-goal cushion, as the Devils took a commanding lead in the first period of Game 6, just as they had in Games 4 and 5. Ryan Carter opened the scoring, continuing the strong play of the Devils' fourth line by banging home a rebound on a 3-on-1 at the 10-minute mark. Then, 4 minutes later, Ilya Kovalchuk finished off one of the smoothest, sexiest power-play passing plays you're ever going to see to make it 2-0.
(Seriously, the goal was a sultry sax riff away from being something you can't show during primetime. When it was done, everybody spooned.)
But any fans with a recollection of 1994 were holding their breath. The Devils led 2-0 in Game 6 then too, people said. This one was retracing the tracks of the past far too eerily for anyone's comfort.
[ Nicholas J. Cotsonika: New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur writes another special chapter in storybook career ]
Sure enough, just as they had in 1994, the Rangers turned the game around and clawed their way back. The second period was a mirror image of the first, with New York matching New Jersey's two first period goals, almost right down to the time they were scored. Ruslan Fedotenko cut the lead in half at the 10-minute mark; Ryan Callahan eradicated the lead 4 minutes later.
And the Rangers kept coming. They controlled the final 40 minutes of this game, outshooting the Devils 21 to 12. It seemed as though it was only a matter of time before they broke through and scored that third goal.
But Martin Brodeur could not be stopped. He looked like the best goaltender in the world.
It was all so familiar.

The New Jersey Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Then a player born in the Soviet Union, Ruslan Fedotenko, scored. Then the New York Rangers captain, Ryan Callahan, scored. The ghosts of the 1994 Eastern Conference Final Game 6 appeared to be haunting the barn in New Jersey, 18 years after Alexei Kovalev and Mark Messier rallied the Rangers to an eventual series win.
That is, until rookie Adam Henrique scored this goal 1:03 into overtime to give his team a 3-2 win and send the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2003:

"That one was like Christmas," said Henrique on NBC, as his team celebrated its fifth conference title since 1995. "[Alexei Ponikarovsky] and [Ilya Kovalchuk] jarred it loose, it fell through his pads, and I'll take it."
It was Henrique's second overtime game winner of the 2012 playoffs, as his double-OT goal eliminated the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the opening round.

It also game in the same game as this rather uncomfortable moment for Henrique earlier in Game 6:

The joy and pain of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Game 1 of the Final begins on Wednesday in Newark.

Adam Oates is the New Jersey Devils assistant coach in charge of the power play, which was 2-for-20 against the New York Rangers heading into Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final. It's entirely possible he will carry around this Ilya Kovalchuk goal in his wallet, showing it to complete strangers and telling them how gorgeous it is.
Watch all five Devils get involved on their second goal of Game 6, with Ruslan Fedotenko in the box for tripping Ryan Carter.

That's some video game [expletive] right there.
[ Also: Conan O'Brien joins list of L.A. media who haven't figured out Kings ]
For those keeping score at home, it was Adam Henrique to Peter Harrold at the top of the zone as the Devils played the umbrella. Harrold waited out a Derek Stepan blocked-shot attempt and dished to Henrique, who sent a quick pass to David Clarkson in the slot. Rather than shoot, Clarkson dumped down to Dainius Zubrus, who had a wide-open seam in front of the crease. He passed to Kovalchuk who one-timed it past Henrik Lundqvist.
We don't want to say that power-play goal was a thing of beauty, but it was just named Miss New Jersey.

Preview: New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils, 8 p.m. ET
The Rangers and Devils head back to Newark for Game 6. Will the Rangers stave off elimination, just as they did in 1994? Here's the key: Michael Del Zotto (above, punching Alexei Ponikarovsky in the beak). The offensive defenceman is a minus-5 in this series, going even in 3 of them, and minus-2 and minus-3 in the Game 2 and Game 5 losses, respectively. The Rangers' top pairing looks to be slowing down -- totally natural considering the minutes they've played all year -- and if Del Zotto can't eat up some quality minutes behind them, the Rangers could be done tonight.

For Los Angeles Kings, when does rest become rust for Stanley Cup Final? (Puck Daddy)

It's late May. You've played three rounds of hockey. The bumps and bruises are there, but you're playing for the Stanley Cup, man.
The three teams left in the race for the Cup are all feeling the effects of playing an extra month and a half of hockey. And while the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers will be playing their 18th and 20th games of the playoffs (respectively) tonight, the Los Angeles Kings have breezed their way through three rounds with a meager 14.
The Rangers played that many through the opening two rounds and according to STATS, LLC., no Cup-winning team has ever played more than 18 games to get to the Final.
By eliminating the Vancouver Canucks in five games and the St. Louis Blues in four, the Kings are used to having time off between series. With eight days between Game 5 against the Phoenix Coyotes and Game 1 of the Final, is that too much rest for the Kings?

Think about the most cynical cynic in your life, or the curmudgeonliest curmudgeon. What percentage of their personality is an act? What percentage is authentic? Where does this worldview develop?
When you watch New York Rangers Coach John Tortorella and his natural comportment — short, intimidating answers with the media, screaming down the bench at players or opposing coaches — you can't help but wonder what influenced it. Did Tortorella emerge from the womb complaining about the doctors' treatment, sneering at an orderly who looked like Larry Brooks?
Craig Wolff of the Star-Ledger attempted to answer this with an origin story on John Tortorella that's rather terrific — speaking with his father, his former coaches and teammates back in high school and college.
On authenticity, Wolfe writes:
Posturing is not his thing, old coaches, friends, family and former teammates say. The fiery coach with darts for eyes, especially on display in the storm of the Stanley Cup playoff season in news conferences and behind the bench, is not contrived, they say.
But it was Tortorella's behavior in baseball and hockey as a young athlete that really gives you a sense of how demanding he is as an NHL coach.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Rangers coach John Tortorella is drawing confidence from a loss to the New Jersey Devils that pushed his top-seeded team to the brink of elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Rangers trail the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final 3-2 after Wednesday's home loss to the Devils, setting the stage for a must-win Game Six on Friday in New Jersey to have any shot at reaching the Stanley Cup Final.
(Ed. Note: We're proud to welcome two of our favorite bloggers, Chuck and Pants from What's Up, Ya Sieve? , to the Puck Daddy fold as they author our weekly NHL Playoff Beard Watch every Thursday.)

By Chuck and Pants from What's Up, Ya Sieve?
The stage is nearly set for the ultimate NHL showdown. The Devils and Rangers battle it out at center stage while the Kings wait in the offing for their opponent to be named. It's a long, hard fight to be among the last teams standing. Every one inch is earned.
This week, we salute the beards of some Unsung Unshaven Heroes. Marquee name or rookie sensation, it doesn't matter what their contracts say now.
They fight on - and the proof of is all over their faces.

Devils guarantee they’ll downplay 1994 conference finals for Game 6 vs. Rangers (Puck Daddy)

"We're going to go in and win Game 6. That was the focus this morning and it's the way we feel right now. We've done that all year, we've won all the games we've had to win. … I know we're going to go in and win Game 6 and bring it back here (to the Garden) for Game 7 ... We have enough talent and experience to turn the tide. That's exactly what we're going to do in Game 6."
That was Mark Messier on May 24, 1994, making the statement before Game 6 at the Meadowlands between the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers. He then scored a hat trick to force Game 7, where the Rangers eliminated the Devils in double overtime.
With the Devils again leading the conference final against the rivals heading into Game 6 in Jersey, the inevitable parallels between the two series were bound to come up — even if Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, Brad Richards and coach John Tortorella refused to take the bait on any 1994 questions on Thursday.
[ Related: Rangers won't Mark Messier-type guarantees going into Game 6 ]
There would be no more painful way for the Devils to exit the playoffs than to have history repeat: Having the chance to eliminate the Rangers on home ice in Game 6 — on the anniversary of Messier Day, no less — blowing it, and then falling short of the Cup Final with a loss at MSG.
Which is probably why none of the Devils that discussed the events of 18 years ago were really interested in focusing on the past.
