Rick DiPietro, the star goaltender of the New York Islanders, has 12 years remaining on a 15-year contract.

So why are the Islanders suddenly stockpiling goalies like a squirrel hording nuts before winter?

According to the Isles, DiPietro remains on target to be skating by August and good to go for the start of training camp in September after he was limited to just five appearances last season due to two knee surgeries.

After being exposed with inexperienced backups Joey MacDonald and Yann Danis last season, the Isles drafted European goalies in the second and third rounds of the June entry draft. They then inked proven veteran Dwayne Roloson to a two-year, $5 million free-agent contract on July 1 as insurance in case DiPietro, who also has endured hip...

The New York Islanders have signed goaltender Scott Munroe, left wing Jeremy Reich and defenseman Brett Westgarth to one-year contracts. Munroe, an undrafted goalie, has been in the Philadelphia Flyers' organization for the past four seasons. He led the Phantoms to the Calder Cup Playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and had a save percentage of .926 with four shutouts last year.
