General manager Bob Gainey put a new face on the Canadiens as the team concluded two days of frantic activity at the start of free agency.

The Canadiens set the stage for the activity when Gainey announced that he had extended contract offers to only two of the 10 unrestricted free agents on the Montreal roster. They were defenseman Mike Komisarek, who opted instead for a five-year, $22.5 million offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, and forward Alex Kovalev, who hadn't made a decision by the time the Canadiens withdrew the offer. Captain Saku Koivu and seven other players were told they didn't fit in the Canadiens' plans.
