Steve Yzerman says he was excited and nervous before his NHL debut for the Detroit Red Wings in 1983 at Winnipeg. He says thinking about being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night stirs similar emotions. Yzerman's anxiety about playing subsided when he had a goal and an assist in his first game and was pleasantly surprised with how well he kept up the pace.

The job of scoring goals continues to get more difficult for a Red Wings team that began the season offensively challenged.

The Wings lost another forward to a long-term injury Saturday when right wing Jason Williams sustained a fractured right fibula. He will be out two months, joining fellow forwards Johan Franzen (torn knee ligament, March) and Valtteri Filppula (broken wrist, late December) on the injured list.

The club was counting on 20 goals this season from the skilled Williams, who had two goals and five assists in his first 14 games. He also manned the right point on the second power-play unit.

"Losing Willy was a blow to us; he was playing in more minutes and more situations than we anticipated, but that's just the way it's gone," coach Mike Babcock...

Kessel scored his first goal with Toronto and Gustavsson made 35 saves to lead the Maple Leafs to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. After a dreadful start to the season, things have started to turn around for the Maple Leafs.

Detroit Red Wings forward Jason Williams could miss two months after fracturing his right fibula in a 5-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Williams crashed hard into the boards during the second period. The 29-year-old right winger was on the ice for several minutes before being helped to the dressing room.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg scored in the shootout to lift Detroit to a 2-1 win over San Jose, snapping the Sharks' six-game winning streak. Zetterberg also had a goal in regulation, and Chris Osgood made 33 saves for Detroit, which isn't the high-scoring team it has been the past few years.
