What We Learned: Worst thing about NHL Awards? The voters (Puck Daddy)

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
Hockey fans will absolutely hate to hear this, but here it is anyway: There's one thing baseball does way better than hockey, and to which this sport really needs to switch as soon as humanly possible.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America makes a point to publish the ballots of every person who voted for Major League Baseball's awards, and that level of accountability is generally welcomed in the sports world at large. You know exactly who voted for exactly what, and writers who made some of the more absurd picks for the MVP or Cy Young awards have to try to defend those choices as best they can.
The Professional Hockey Writers' Association, however, does not publish the individual ballots of its members, and that they don't is ludicrous. This was a debate that kicked up around the end of the regular season, when some writers, in the interest of transparency and to engender discussion, said who they voted for when it came to a number of awards and often why they did so. That they were occasionally wrong in their voting is to be expected, because no one can get everything right all the time, but at least those writers in particular had the guts to say, "No, I didn't think Sergei Bobrovsky was more valuable to his team than Jonathan Toews," no matter how ridiculous such a statement was.
But that the organization doesn't do so is ridiculous and a little cowardly.

Brendan Shanahan leaving Dept. of Player Safety for Calgary Flames? (Puck Daddy)

Whenever Brendan Shanahan leaves the NHL Department of Safety, conventional wisdom was that it would be for a general manager or player personnel role.
That job might be with the Calgary Flames.
John Shannon of Sportsnet confirmed that Shanahan was in Calgary on Friday, previously reporting that his meeting was with owner Murray Edwards and CEO Ken King regarding a director of hockey operations gig. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that no job offer was made to Shanahan at the meeting.
Jay Feaster remains the general manager in Calgary , although an embattled one. The Flames have missed the playoffs for four straight seasons. Adding Shanahan wouldn’t exactly be a vote of confidence; in fact, it smacks of what the Colorado Avalanche did in elevating Joe Sakic up the managerial food chain and minimizing Greg Sherman’s role. (Maybe the common denominator is Ryan O’Reilly.)
Obviously the Flames’ gain is the NHL’s loss, but Shanahan’s innovations and revisions to the Department of Player Safety – from the instructional videos to the disciplinary standards that have helped reduce concussions in the NHL during his two-year tenure – will endure through the staff he’s added, like former NHL defenseman Rob Blake.
That’s assuming he leaves the Flames. And that the NHL doesn’t tinker with what’s been a successful sheriff’s department Shanahan has built.

What We Learned: Do we really appreciate Zdeno Chara enough? (Puck Daddy)

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
A galaxy of Pittsburgh Penguins stars blinked out, just like that; the only light remaining was from black dwarves Brandon Sutter and Chris Kunitz. At the center of it all, the pillar upon which Claude Julien has constructed his defense and his team and his approach to the game itself, was the NHL's resident Galactus, a towering world-eater who has been the best at his job in the entire world for a period of several years.
The fact that we aren't falling down in with sheer joy at the idea of being able to watch Zdeno Chara play smothering, punishing, enveloping defense every time he climbs over the boards like a giant is a little sickening.
Men of his size have moved with grace and skill and speed in other sports, but never in the full armor of an NHL player. Others approach his size, of course. Tyler Myers and John Scott and the late Derek Boogaard, all just an inch shorter. Hal Gill and Brian Boyle check in at 6-foot-7. But none have played the game at a level even approaching that of Chara's, who now moves on to his second Stanley Cup Final in three years.
Just how unappreciated is Chara in his own time, even with the acknowledgement that he is indeed a former Norris Trophy winner and six-time All-Star? There were certain elements of the Boston media who, as recently as the Maple Leafs series, were advocating that he be stripped of the Bruins' captaincy. All that, though, has gone as silent as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Kris Letang, Jarome Iginla, and all but five Penguins did in their terrible dud of an Eastern Conference Finals sweep.
That Chara wasn't nominated for the Norris again this season -- or indeed, in any season since about 2007 -- seems like borderline criminal oversight by the people who vote on this sort of thing, and whose ballots typically run more or less in accordance with Nos. 1-3 in scoring by defensemen for any given season.
Letang (who utterly embarrassed himself in every zone during this Eastern Conference Final), PK Subban and Ryan Suter were among the nominees who finished ahead of Chara, and there they go at Nos. 2, 1, and 3 , respectively, in points this season.
Chara? Well shoot, you gotta click over to the second page to find him in a tie for 38th with Patrick Wiercioch and Marek Zidlicky, among others, at 19 points this season.
What a bum, right?
Obviously he has a little bit of help on the defensive side of things, what with another terribly underrated defenseman in Dennis Seidenberg capable of parachuting into any matchup, alongside Chara or apart from him, as well as Patrice Bergeron, the premier defensive center in the world, in front of him. All have combined to put Tuukka Rask, as with Tim Thomas before him, in line to become a very, very rich goaltender.
Maybe, too, it's the ordinariness of Chara's excellence that makes it so difficult to appreciate.

What We Learned: Bruins, Penguins Game 2 needs much better officiating, for safety’s sake (Puck Daddy)

Hello, this is a feature that will run through the entire season and aims to recap the weekend’s events and boils those events down to one admittedly superficial fact or stupid opinion about each team. Feel free to complain about it.
Not being one to complain about the quality of officiating in an NHL game, or lack thereof, it was very strange to see the events of Saturday night's Eastern Conference Final Game 1 unfold as they did.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are, we would all agree, the better team in the series when it comes purely to playing the sport of hockey, and few gave the Boston Bruins too much of a chance to advance to their second Stanley Cup Final in three years, with just one caveat. If they could agitate the Penguins into "playing their game," rather than that which Pittsburgh prefers, they at least had a chance. So far, so good.
The Penguins, who spent much of this season loath to be drawn into these types of incidents, were very much dismayed by the Bruins' behind-the-play rough stuff and insistence on finishing every check, and this issue was only exacerbated when David Krejci scored an ugly goal against the run of play midway through the first.
The Penguins had, to that point, not spent too much time actually trailing on home ice; they lost a pair of home games to the Islanders but apart from third-period goals, the amount of actual minutes spent behind on the scoreboard was minimal. They looked uncomfortable being down that early, and not having a way to answer back within less than a minute or two, as they had previously.
It was no real surprise that this situation, coupled with the Bruins' continual work along the boards to finish every check with as much authority as possible, caused things to come to a head early in the second. Just 1:38 in, Matt Cooke confirmed what every living-in-the-past Boston media member and fan has been saying about him: He hasn't changed at all. The five-and-a-game he got for running Adam McQuaid was well-deserved, regardless of how long the Bruins' defenseman, who has a history of concussions, lay prone on the ice, possibly (probably) trying to draw a call.
The refs did the only thing they could do there; and though the call was controversial in the greater Pittsburgh area, they at least tried, at that point, to keep things from boiling over. They did the opposite when Brad Marchand ran James Neal from behind in a not-so-similar situation about 10 minutes later. Marchand, who should have a status as a dirty player just as extreme as Cooke's if not worse, only got two for boarding. And that was when the game went completely out of control.
Sidney Crosby is right that the officials allowed things to escalate in that game, but shockingly went without mentioning the role the wound-up Penguins had in proceedings.
Marchand could have gotten five as well, and the only people who would be mad about it, really, were Bruins fans and players, who wouldn't have found the irony in their complaints about Matt Cooke if you drew them a map. That he didn't was what led directly to the Jarome Iginla/Chris Kelly run-in that in turn provided the impetus for the Crosby/Zdeno Chara/Tuukka Rask incident and the Evgeni Malkin/Patrice Bergeron fight. All of it stupid, all of it ultimately pointless.
Those hard feelings didn't go away in the third period, despite the refs letting everything but an innocuous Crosby slash on Tyler Seguin very late in the proceedings go without raising their eyebrows. And from all the talk immediately following the game, it seems as though the Penguins are feeling hard done by in all this.
(Again, there is inherent irony that Pittsburgh is the team that finds itself complaining about officiating going against it, but here we are.)
And one has to wonder what that means for tonight's Game 2.

Penguins in 6
Blackhawks in 7

The Bruins will try to win this thing by slowing the pace to a crawl, playing physical hockey and scoring dirty goals. Thing is, the Penguins aren’t some offensively fancy-pants team that’ll wilt under those conditions – they can win games as brutal as Sidney Crosby's smile.
The key: The power play for the Penguins, where they’ve been he best team in the playoffs. The Bruins have to find a way to limit their chances, and Tuukka Rask needs to be their best penalty killer. Or just don't take penalties. That too.
In the end, the Pens just have too much, and I’ve not been enamored with the way the Bruins have played thus far this postseason.
[Preview: The defending Cup champs vs. the NHL's best team in 2013 ]
The West will be won in one of two ways: Either in a Kings sweep thanks to an impenetrable Jonathan Quick, or a long series that goes the distance. I feel the latter is the probable outcome, with the Blackhawks’ stars getting on track offensively and barely putting enough goals on the board to beat Quick.
This could mimic the Kings’ conference semifinal: The home team holds serve through six games, and the Blackhawks win their second straight Game 7 at United Center.

Penguins in 7
Blackhawks in 7
Picked chalk before the playoffs, so I might as well stick with it. Though one could easily make a case for any of the four teams in the Conference Finals to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.
The Penguins' offense is flying and they're getting solid goaltending from Tomas Vokoun, something that hindered them at the start of the first round. They got to Craig Anderson and they'll do the same to Tuukka Rask. Chicago will need their top guys to step up and score if they're to solve Jonathan Quick, who's currently playing on another planet. Expect all seven games to be decided by one goal, with the Blackhawks getting just enough offense to deny the Kings a second trip to the Final.

Nostalgia’s a hell of a drug.
It can soothe pain or distract one from a dire situation with the warm blanket of happier times. Do you think teams retire numbers during the season just to fill space in the rafters? Of course not: It’s a masturbatory night of self-contentment designed to overwhelm current emotions with the idealized ones of yore.
Sometimes teams go beyond a commemorative night and decide to make every night a nostalgia trip.
The Colorado Avalanche are the latest team to dip into their glory years to reenergize the franchise, like Vince McMahon signing The Rock for sporadic TV appearances and two Wrestlemanias. Joe Sakic will build the team; Patrick Roy will coach the team (while doing his best tap dance on Sakic’s toes in making personnel decisions).
Will the New York Rangers become the next one tripping down memory lane?
When John Tortorella was fired on Wednesday , the candidates to fill the Rangers’ coaching vacancy were immediately identified: Alain Vigneault, Lindy Ruff and Marc Crawford among them.
Ruff has ties to the Rangers, as a former defenseman. But there’s another candidate synonymous with the team whose name evokes leadership, success and male-pattern baldness.
The candidate is Mark Messier, the most outlandish and intriguing man for the Rangers’ open job.

Red Wings vs. Blackhawks Game 7: The 7 questions that will decide series winner (Puck Daddy)

The Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings meet for the final time as division rivals on Wednesday night, as their unpredictable series culminates in a Game 7 in the Windy City.
Which team wins the Western Conference semifinal and moves on to face the Los Angeles Kings?
The answer will be found through these Seven Questions About Game 7:

1. Can Zetterberg and Datsyuk Lead Detroit To The Final?

Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk have been silenced in this series, with Datsyuk tallying a goal and an assist and Zetterberg failing to score a goal (he has three assists). Were it not for their efforts in Games 6 and 7 last round, the Wings wouldn’t even be here. The Wings need that type of leadership now, desperately.

2. Will Jimmy Howard Outduel Corey Crawford?

After looking unbeatable for three games, Howard’s given up eight goals in his last two losses to the Blackhawks. If he’s going to rebound, Game 7 is an appropriate spot: Howard is 2-1 in Game 7s, stopping 32 of 33 shots against Phoenix in April 2010; 27 of 30 in a loss at the San Jose Sharks in 2011; and 31 of 33 shots in that Game 7 win over Anaheim earlier this month.
Crawford’s lone Game 7? It was April 2011 at Vancouver, where he took the loss despite stopping 36 of 38 shots.
3. How’s The Ice?
Chicago’s had temperatures in the 80s this week. That’s fine. More challenging: The fact that The Rolling Stones played United Center on Tuesday night, leading to some speculation that the ice might be less than stellar for Game 7. From James Neveau of Madhouse Enforcer:
What does that mean for the Hawks? First and most importantly, it means they are going to need to try to make the simple play as often as possible. The stretch passes that have been working to such perfection over the last two games in spreading out the Wings’ defense may not be as accurate during this game as they have been, and so a dump and chase mentality might have to be the way to go if the ice surface is bumpy.
Bad ice works in Detroit’s favor. It won’t give the Blackhawks no satisfaction. We may watch as their tears go by.
