In between negotiations toward an eight-year contract extension with captain Rick Nash, which was announced Friday, the Blue Jackets used free agency to plug two gaping holes in their lineup.

Center Sami Pahlsson was signed to a three-year contract worth $7.95 million, while goaltender Mathieu Garon signed a two-year deal worth $2.4 million.

The Blue Jackets plan to use Pahlsson as their checking-line center, while Garon will get 20-25 starts in relief of No. 1 goaltender Steve Mason.

"Lots of experience, and it's winning experience," Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said of Pahlsson. "He's going to play big minutes for us, and he's going to play at crucial times—late in the game when we have the lead."
