Atlanta won a season opener at home for just the second time in franchise history. ... D Zach Bogosian had an inauspicious debut for the Thrashers, picking up his first penalty 24 seconds into his first NHL shift before becoming the target of Washington enforcer Donald Brashear in the game's final minute. "If the kid is going to fight a guy, he might as well fight one of the toughest guys in the league right away," coach John Anderson joked of the 18-year-old, who was drafted third overall this past June. ... Anderson notched the victory in his NHL coaching debut. "(My stomach) was not good," he said. "I had about 10 Rolaids. But I made the starting faceoff, so that was all right." ... G Kari Lehtonen turned aside 39 shots in the wild contest, including a penalty shot by reigning Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin. ... Atlanta scored seven goals in the contest - one more than in its last four preseason games combined. The seven tallies also were a franchise record for a season opener. st 10-11-08 2:07 et |
