NHL - Sports Rumors

The Philadelphia Flyers have had 16 different captains in their 41-year history. They have come in many shapes, sizes and toothless grins.

Some of the captains were hardy souls. No-frills, net-clearing players. Ed Van Impe comes to mind. Some of the captains were physical on the ice and vocal off it. They were unafraid to lash the team, when needed, in the media. Hello, Derian Hatcher. Some of the captains weren't dominating players, but stood up for their teammates with their physical play - and didn't shy away from a fight or four. Like Mel Bridgman.

All of which brings us to the current captain, center Mike Richards, who is quietly becoming one of the best leaders in the franchise's history. He's not Bobby Clarke. Yet. But from this perspective, he is on his way.

Clarke, of course, was the ultimate captain. He was a high-scoring player known for his grit and dirty work in the corners. His crafty stick work - opponents gave it another description - was legendary

Richards has Clarke's tenaciousness, playmaking ability and scoring talents. But there's a difference between the two centers. Clarke was an instigator who had teammates rushing to his aid. Richards rushes to the aid of his teammates. Take his knee-jerk response in Vancouver Tuesday, for instance.

Fifteen seconds into the game, left winger Simon Gagne was blind-sided by defenseman Kevin Bieksa and knocked to the ice. It was a cheap shot, but Bieksa, inexplicably, was not penalized. Richards decided to take things in his own hands. Literally. He went after Bieksa and the two slugged it out. Never mind that Richards lost the fight. He sent a message to his teammates: He will protect their marquee player, especially since Gagne missed most of last year with a concussion.

He is well on his way to being a great captain.Keith Primeau was the same type of player until concussions forced him to retire. In my eyes a captain is a guy who will stick up for his teammates and not the other way around.(Cough Lindros cough)This wasn't the first instance that Richie stood up for a player and it won't be the last.
Hopefully last years ECF run wasn't just a one time deal for the Orange & Black!

richards is a good solid player but i am tired of players like gagne on the team. he doesnt go into the boards and lacks physical play. never been a huge gagne fan. i still wish the flyers had a justin williams. gagne doesnt have the heart like the rest of the squad. last year he was out and said if the flyers made it to the stanley cup finals he would come back. funny how timmonen had a clot in his foot that was severe and almost sidelined his season and playoffs but he managed to comeback. smith played with two seperated shoulders and hatcher was getting fluid drained from his knees all season. if gagne suffers one more setback the flyers should say goodbye to him.

Bobby Clarke is my favorite hockey player of all time. He was awesome. Mike Richards is an incredible leader too. Jeff Carter isn't bad either (lol). I've been a Flyers fan since the days of the Bullies, Clarke will always be #1 for me, but I like the team we have now :) GO FLYERS

Richards is a good example of what a captain should be Kudos to him. Good thing Clarke is not the GM because he would do something to screw him up as he did with other great captains. Clarke is threatened by good players who will out shine his performance of the past. Richards keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!

I am first in line when it comes to Lindros bashing but one thing the guy never did was back away from a fight. At least not before it became a health issue. That said, I'll take Richards' style over Lindros' every time.

#4......Are you a moron or something Gagne is one of the best players 9in league and the only reason he said he would come back last year if the flyers made it to the finals was to help the team and if you ask me i would of rather him just satyed out if they had made it. Plus he couldn't play because of the post conconsion syndrome and let me ask you have you ever had a concusion proabaly not, they suck especialy when it is a bad one, so think before you speak son.....

Right on, crxsi_18. You can't equate a concussion to any other kind of injury. Reinjuring a broken bone is not even close to sustaining additional concussions. Just ask Primeau and Lindros. Gagne is an excellent player and I worry every time he takes a hard hit that he may get another concussion. I'd rather he stay away from heavy hits and be able to play and score.

Richie does hit the weight room philiafan...he is very strong for his size, he's relatively small compared to the guys he usually tustles with. Bieksa is a very tough customer.

are you serious philiafan? he's not picking fights, hes sticking up for teammates, huge difference! sticking up for teammates and losing a fight is better than letting players take liberties on your teammates. richie's role isn't as a fighter so he doesn't have to worry about "winning" the fights. come on now.

    to slammguy:
Bobby Clarke did not ruin captains because of jealousy. He has nothing to worry about 3 straight trips to the finals and 2 cups pretty much set his career in stone for the team. The Flyers have always had solid captains with the exception of Lindros. Clarke wanted him to succeed as much as anybody in Philly. He gave up Brindamour because Lindros was sleeping with his wife and he couldn't get rid of the "franchise." That shiner Lindros came out with in the pre-skate was courtesy of Rick Tocchet who upon hearing Lindros' speech clocked him in the locker room. Brindamour was one of the most clutch players the Flyers have had and I am glad for him that he managed to get a cup even though it was in Carolina and not Philly. Lindros was foolish letting his father be his agent. Another case of Little League dad gone crazy. Another guy that comes to mind is good old Todd Marinovich and his dad. When you play pro sports it is best to do what the other adults that play pro sports do and leave your parents in the stands and not at the negotiating table.

My first impression of richards, which hasnt changed, was in the ahl playoffs during the lockout. From the moment he stepped into that series he was brindamor with more skill. The first time I think we saw it at the nhl level was in the 06-07 campaign when they played buffaloe at home and were getting drubbed again and richards got the flyers back into the game with a big fight. In the end the best captain etc depends on number of deep playoff runs and cups, in that department clarke has a huge lead, and you may want to hate him but lindros still does too.
On a similar note I did get a chill seeing jeff carter wearing the A in gagnes absence and realized that Jeff could very easily be a great captain in this city too. Carter debuted in that same AHL playoff run and at first look he was lindros with his head up. Carter still hasnt shown the strength of lindros quite yet but he has shown an even better wrister and surpsingly great, charasmatic leadership.
after that fight richards needs to go see the MMA trainer that cote works with...

Leadership is a key element of a championship team. Richards is a fantastic captain. He does all he can to motivate his teammates...with success. Your captain need not be your best player. But, he should be able to motivate his teammates through words and example, to play at their very best. As of 2009, possibly nobody does it like Mike Richards. The only other captain who one can argue is better with the "C" is in Detroit.

Its clear that Richards is holding this team together through all of these injuries, he will go down as a selke caliber defensive player, one of the best leaders of all time, and will definitly make a run at an MVP trophy sooner or later.

richards will be one of the flyers greats. i would take him over crosby anyday. he may not score the same as crosby but he has the skills to be a better leader and captain then crosby. i have noticed that richards name is always there when a big goal is scored or we need a shoot out goal. richards reminds my of an yzerman with more grit.

#1 Joe B is 100% right. Primeau put the flyers on his back and carried them to w/in a goal of the finals the year before the strike. Richards is the same type of guy. Btw, for all of Clarke's failings as a GM, let's give him credit for drafting Richards and NHL goals leader Carter in the 1st round 4 yrs ago.
