NHL - Sports Rumors

The New York Rangers and the Columbus Blue Jackets completed a two-for-two trade Wednesday, with New York getting younger and faster up front, and Columbus getting some experienced blueliners.

The Rangers sent Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman to Columbus in exchange for Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche.

Zherdev, often an enigma in Columbus, will be the key to the deal for New York. He was the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft and is coming off his best season in terms of points. He scored 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points in 82 games with Columbus. Fritsche was a second round pick, 46th overall, the same year Zherdev was drafted. A developing two-way player, Fritsche scored 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points last season in Columbus, and was a +2 on a bad team.

Tyutin was a second round pick by the Rangers in 2001, 40th overall. Although he has not shown the offensive flair he showed as a junior, Tyutin has emerged as a solid blueliner in the NHL and signed a four-year extension in February. Backman was a first round pick of the St. Louis Blues, 24th overall, in 1998. Backman has also not shown much offensive upside, his best season is 18 points in 52 games with St. Louis in 2005-2006, and durability has been somewhat of an issue. Backman has, however, developed into a steady NHL defenseman.

only good news is that fritsche is finally gone, that guy gets knocked down by a stiff breeze.
besides that, i think columbus has lost their mind.

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb move for the Jackets. I think they are trying to not be competitive, they trade Federov and Foote at the deadline last year and now they trade two good young player for two hacks that couldn't cut it in NYC. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

After years of frustration under the old regime don't we at least owe Howson a chance to see if he in fact does know what he is doing??? This team will win with defense which is one of many words that Zherdev does not understand. I suggest you wait and see what top 6 forward they bring in before this is called a bad move.

That just it, they won't bring in a top six forward. They already gave away (3) of them in Brule, Zherdev, & Fritsche. I am not sayin that they were top six forwards now but they were all young and talented and the Jackets essentially gave them away for a bunch of no-names.

i think Columbus is trying to get worse. Zherdev was one of the only bright spots on that team.

    To those non-CBJ fans.
Here in Columbus we know Z as one thing. "A one man show." Thats what he wanted to be. He was selfish and thought he was amazing. The local press has been publishing stories like that since he got here and it's true. Foote and Federov were traded to free up room for this week right here. Foote ASKED to be traded to Colorado and got his wish. Federov is just old and expensive. This makes 5 veteran players the CBJ have brought in this offseason. They now have a solid defense and are one top 6 winger away from recovering for Z's points with the young talent the CBJ will bring up this year.

Backman is a chump. Tuts is a solid top 4 defender though. Not anything special at offense, but was our best hitter and blocked a lot of shots. I think he was top 10 or so in the league last year.
Fische i could really care less about. We have a ton of centers already. Zherdev will hopefully give us a legit winger.

Ryan Zherdev had really mellowed out since Hitch and Hawson came in. and what forward should Columbus bring in? if anything they SHOULD HAVE traded Zherdev for a legit Center. a packaged deal for joakenin would be a good trade. maybe Zherdev and 19th pick for Ollie? that would have made this team a good team.Tuytin and Backman are no more then a 2nd defensive pair. possibly a puck moving true #1 D man would have been better for zherdev then Tuytin and Backman

I am not negative, I just hate seeing teams with potential make stupid moves and ruin any chance they will ever have of winning the CUP.

Looks like CBJ have essentially replaced Zherdev with Huselius, whom they signed to a 4-year deal.

Good move for Slats; not only does this create a good match with Gomez and his playmaking abilities but it places Zherdev as a liaison for Cherepanov and Anisimov in making their transition to North American hockey that much easier.

Jackets ditch Zherdev and sign Huselius. A guy who is sporadic offensively and plays ZERO defense. Good luck scoring goals this year Columbus...because you will need it.
