Quebec topping list for NHL club?

“GaryQuebec City is apparently planning on building a brand new arena and it has got NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly all excited. The rumor is that Quebec has moved itself up to the top of the list for cities that could take on an NHL club, according to the Toronto Sun.

Las Vegas and Kansas City are also apparently on the list but the Sun reports that Daly told competitor the Toronto Star on Oct. 11 that "the league favors Canadian cities that have supported NHL franchises in the past."

Quebec, of course, had the Nordiques, which became the Colorado Avalanche. So perhaps the league can put another team there and then eventually move them to Las Vegas or Kansas City.

Gary is a loser and the league cannot afford to continue to increase in size. This is getting absurd. The NHL will be bankrupt in a matter of years.

RVB....its not about "expansion" its about relocation of 2-3 teams in the mix. Atlanta MAY be one of those considered...that's if this even happens. Winnipeg still has no team yet! It was rumoured a few years ago about a Lightening strike in Winnipeg...Tampa Bay is still there....

i love how they say "maybe they'll put another team there, then move them to kc or vegas eventually"...are you kidding me? get rid of a couple of the u.s. teams (aka nashville and atlanta, NON-hockey towns) and move them back to canada...i'm a die-hard bruins fan, and i miss the old rivalries with quebec...as well as hartford!

Move the Thrashers to Quebec. No one in Atlanta will even care.
Move the Predators to Winnipeg. No one in Nashville will care, either.
Move the Coyotes to Hartford. Do they even have ice in Arizona?
Move the Islanders to Seattle. We already know Wang wants to move them to Kansas City, but the NHL in KC sucked before, and it will suck again. Seattle is a great market looking for something to take their mind off the Sonics leaving. Hockey could do that.
DO NOT put a team in Las Vegas. It will create no revenue, the team will suck and it will be folded.
DO NOT move the Florida teams. Both have had success very recently. If you have to move one, make it the Lightning, and move it to a hockey rich market, where St. Louis and Lecalvier can thrive in the public eye.

Gary Bettman is losing his reputation as an "astute business man," he now realizes that he alone cannot convert the southern US market into stark raving hockey fans (see Quebec City, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Hartford and KC). save ur face Gary and put hockey in markets that can not only support it but live and die with their teams. And while you're doing that please start looking into another line of work. You've done nothing but damage to true hockey fans; please exit.

this is simply that... another rumour... I would love to see more hockey teams in Canada but who knows when that will be (maybe next season with the Coyotes leaving the desert).
Here is the question of the day... What was the point of moving teams to the desert?
Phoenix and Dallas have both gone bankrupt... Hicks was close to losing the team, Florida has like no fans, the teams in Cali atleast have a decent fan base.
    Go Canada!

Isn't if funny how reporters choose to put their own spin on everything to apparently stir the pot and create useless blog? Where in the article did it mention the criteria for Quebec(or any other city for that matter) that needed to be in place to be CONSIDERED? Corporate sponsorship levels....approved owners....business plan.....fan base and ticket sales....and on and on. Lest we forget....Quebec City and Yes Winnipeg could not support an NHL team in the past. Unless things have changed drastically since these teams were re-located then why would one even venture to jump on a band wagon (for or against) without the facts and stability demonstrateable and in place? If it came down to placing 1 team in either Quebec City, Winnepeg or Hamilton just ask yourself (honestly and without emotion), which city has the better chance of fan support and surviving? I would love to see franchises in all 3 cities, but business is business and brings the reality check into play. Reality time, not Dreamerville!

I agree with this , except for Vegas. Vegas can't support a hockey team. They couldn't even support a minor league team.
THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE CANADIAN TEAMS!

RickeyB, Minnesota couldn't support a team back in the days, low ticket sales, etc. Then the NHL moved the North Stars to Dallas. Then years later, put another team back in Minnesota and the Wild are selling out games now. It could happen in Quebec and/or Winnipeg. You don't realize how much you miss something intill you don't have it.

Well said janders286, a team in Quebec City can't be any worse than some of the cities that are struggling to support a team now. I think a team there would be very successful. I would like to see teams put in Quebec, Winnipeg, and re-locate 2 of the following teams to those cities: Atlanta, Nashville, Phoenix, NY Isles, Florida, or Carolina. The 4 teams that aren't part of the move simply get dropped, no one will care. Put all the players from those 4 teams in a "supplemental draft" and let the remaining teams pick from their rosters which 2-3 players they want. Rapid expansion has watered down the talent level of the NHL, would kill to see the old 21-team NHL again. And while we're at it, get rid of the stupid-a$$ 3 division deal, go back to 2 divisions in each Conference.

Expansion would be great. Besides the three cities mentioned, Milwaukee area and Quad Cities would be other great places for teams.

Yeah, is this about expansion or moving teams? If it's expansion then it's a joke. Even moving teams is a bit wrong.
What the NHL really needs to do is CONTRACT. I'm sorry, but there is no need for 30 NHL teams. I know you have Canada that's bigger into hockey than any of the other 4 major sports....but even still, you only need about 24 teams max. Get rid of 1 team in each division (or something close to it).
Nashville, Atlanta, Phoenix, the Kings (sorry LA, you don't need 2 hockey teams...you don't have a football team for crying out loud), one of the Florida teams, and the Islanders (sorry, but they just need to go at this point, not move).
6 division of 4. No moving teams to more places where they'll fail or putting franchises where there is no ice or hockey fans.
